LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – Fifth-year senior captain Requir van der Merwe knocked off a pair of ranked opponents, Sunday, to lead the Cardinal at the Little Rock Quad Meet at the Jack Stevens Center.
Stanford opened the day with a 24-9 win over host Little Rock, improving to 3-0 in the Pac-12 Conference. The Cardinal (4-2) fell to South Dakota State, 23-15, and Oklahoma, 21-12.
van der Merwe, who moved up a weight class this season and is ranked No. 16 nationally at 157 pounds, defeated ninth-ranked Justin Thomas of Oklahoma, 5-4, and No. 15 Cade DeVos of South Dakota State, 3-2. van der Merwe improves to 5-0 on the season and is 48-17 overall in his Cardinal career.
True freshman Jason Miranda also picked up two wins on the day to improve to 4-0 on the season at 133 pounds. He registered a 6-0 decision over South Dakota State's Trayton Anderson and then upset Tony Madrigal of Oklahoma, 9-4, in sudden victory. Madrigal, who is ranked 18th nationally, was a 2020 NCAA qualifier for the Sooners.
Redshirt freshman Jaden Abas finished 3-0 on the day, improving to 5-1 overall at 149 pounds. The San Diego native opened with a 10-2 major decision against Little Rock's Kyle Prewitt. After posting a 7-4 decision over Hunter Marko of South Dakota State, he closed out with a 5-2 decision against 18th-ranked Mitch Moore of Oklahoma. A transfer from Virginia Tech, Moore was a two-time NCAA qualifier at 141 pounds for the Hokies.
Sophomore Jackson DiSario (125 pounds) and redshirt senior Nathan Traxler (285 pounds) finished 2-1 on the day. True freshman Charlie Darracott made his collegiate dual debut against Little Rock, registering a fall in 5:30 over Noah Aziere at 157 pounds.
Stanford wraps-up its 15-day road trip on Sunday Feb. 7 at Oregon State. The Cardinal faces the Beavers at 6 p.m. followed by a dual against Utah Valley in Corvallis.
