STANFORD, Calif. – Competing virtually from Burhman Pavilion on Wednesday afternoon, No. 15 Stanford managed a season-best 398.250 to top No. 9 Navy at 384.300. The Cardinal managed season-best team scores in three of the six events en route to victory.
Sophomore Riley Loos set a new career high with an 83.000 to win the all-around competition. The two teams began on vault, where Loos hit for a career-best 14.800 to win the event title. The native of El Dorado Hills, Calif. also set new benchmarks on still rings (14.500) and high bar (13.300), with the score on rings proving enough to capture the event crown and guide Stanford to a season-best 66.450.
Matthew Szot and freshman Brandon Nguyen took second and third on rings, with the pair posting marks of 13.400 and 12.950, respectively. The vault lineup managed a similar feat, as Curran Phillips (14.600) and Nguyen (14.550) finished second and third behind Loos.
Nguyen, who joined Loos in the all-around competition, finished the day with a combined score of 78.500.
In addition to a second-place finish on high bar, Loos also placed second on floor, parallel bars and pommel horse. Junior Blake Wilson won the floor title with a mark of 14.150, edging Loos at 14.100, as the Cardinal hit for a season-best 68.150 as a team. Stanford also managed a season best on high bar, combining for a 63.150. The Cardinal went 2-3-4 in that event, with Wilson sticking a 12.950 for third and Phillips following with a 12.750 to claim fourth behind Loos in second.
For the third time in as many competitions this year, senior Blake Sun won the parallel bars title with a 13.750. Loos and Phillips followed with a 13.200 each, as the Cardinal nabbed the top three spots in the event.
Just a few days removed from his first collegiate title on pommel horse, sophomore J.R. Chou captured his second title on Wednesday, hitting for a 13.400 to guide Stanford to another 1-2-3 finish in the event. Loos (13.100) and Sun (12.450) rounded out the top three.
A handful of Stanford gymnasts will now prepare to compete at the USA Championships Winter Cup from February 24-28 in Indianapolis, Ind.
