Casey Leads the Way

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Stanford men's swimming and diving picked up three All-America finishes to conclude the second day of the NCAA Men's Swimming and Diving Championships, Thursday at the Greensboro Aquatic Center.

Conor Casey led the way for the Cardinal on the 1-meter springboard, finishing eighth to land on the All-America first team. The Pac-12 champion in the event, Casey scored 294.55 in the finals.

In the 500 free, Grant Shoults took 12th in 4:13.20 to earn second-team All-America honors. The redshirt senior entered the meet seeded 18th in the event, but he closed strong in the final 100 yards of his preliminary heat to advance to the consolation final.  

The Cardinal closed the day with a 16th-place finish in the 400 medley relay. The team, comprised of two freshmen (Ethan Hu and Luke Maurer), a sophomore (Shane Blinkman) and a junior (Daniel Roy), swam 3:05.35.
Stanford was one of three scoring teams in the event to have multiple freshmen on its relay team.   

Two Cardinal swimmers concluded the morning's preliminary session as alternates for the consolation finals in their respective events. Alex Liang swam a season-best of 1:43.15 to finish 17th in the 200 IM, moving the senior to fifth on the school record book in the event.

Freshman Preston Forst was the second alternate in the 500 free, swimming 4:14.57 to finish 18th. Forst was joined in the event by True Sweetser (4:19.82) and Johannes Calloni (4:21.07).

Stanford was also represented in the 200 IM by Blinkman (1:43.99) and Jonathan Affeld (1:44.41). Maurer swam 19.93 in the prelims of the 50 free.

The Cardinal will enter Friday's action in 12th in the team standings with 42 points.

Tomorrow's events include the 400 IM, 100 fly, 200 free, 100 breast, 100 back, the 200 medley relay and the 3-meter diving. The morning session will begin at 7 a.m. PT, and the afternoon at 3 p.m. PT. Both sessions will be streamed on ESPN3.
