STANFORD, Calif. – Their backs against the wall, the Stanford softball team found a way to score twice in the bottom of the seventh inning to defeat BYU, 3-2 Saturday at Smith Family Stadium.\
Down to its final out, the Cardinal (10-2) got the clutch hit from fifth-year senior Kristina Inouye – hitting in the nine-spot – on a two RBI double to bat Sydney Steele and Sydnee Huff across the plate for the walk-off victory.
Inouye's drive to right center was able to drop in the gap and get past the glove of the diving BYU (8-9) centerfielder.
Inouye was 1-for-3 on the day, but her lone hit was the difference maker for the Cardinal.
Stanford reached the bottom of the seventh thanks to a 4-6-3 double play to end the top of the inning. With 5-6-7 hitters due up, the Cardinal managed to put runners on second and third leading up to Inouye's walk-off hit.
Steele singled to the pitcher and Huff singled up the middle, with both advancing a base on a groundout from Montana Dixon.
Three of Stanford's seven hits came in the bottom of the seventh, as it was able to overcome two errors earlier in the day.
Sophomore Alana Vawter picked up the win in a relief appearance to move to 5-0 on the season – more than halfway to her 2020 total. Vawter allowed only one batter on base, allowing zero hits in 3.0 innings in the circle.
Regan Krause picked up the no decision in the start, holding the Cougars to four hits.
Stanford will close out the DeMarini Invitational tomorrow with a doubleheader against UC Santa Barbara. First pitch will be at 11 a.m. PT, with both games being available on the Stanford Live Stream.
