LOS ANGELES - No. 2 Stanford fought toe-to-toe with the nation's No. 1 team USC on Saturday afternoon, but a late run from the Trojans sealed the victory, as the Cardinal ultimately fell 12-8. Freshman Jewel Roemer led all scorers with five goals.
No. 2 Stanford 8 - No. 1 USC 12
It was a back and forth affair early, with Stanford grabbing the early lead, 2-0, on two strikes from Roemer. USC would then respond with three straight goals of its own, and the teams would go on to trade goals back and forth until the Trojans scored twice in the final 15 seconds of the half to own a 7-5 lead at the break.
Again, it was Roemer to start the scoring for Stanford in the second, striking from distance to make the score 7-6, but that was the closest the Cardinal would get. USC scored another two, and held off Stanford defensively for a 9-6 lead, before Chloe Harbilas stopped the bleeding, making it 9-7. A final 3-0 run from the Trojans sealed it, with a goal from Katie Lyons, her second of the day, in the waning minutes making the final score 12-8.
Stanford was 2-of-7 in powerplay opportunities, while USC was 1-of-8. Emalia Eichelberger played all 32 minutes and recorded five saves for the Cardinal. The two teams will square off again on Sunday afternoon in Los Angeles.
