STANFORD, Calif. – No. 6 Stanford men's soccer scored three times in the first half, and coasted to a 3-0 victory on Saturday afternoon at Cagan Stadium. The Cardinal improves to 8-1-1 on the season, and 6-1-1 in Pac-12 play.
Gabe Segal, Zach Ryan and Charlie Wehan scored for the Cardinal, while Cam Cilley, Ryan Ludwick and Will Richmond were credited assists. Andrew Thomas made two saves for the win between the posts.
"I'm really happy with the performance today, we went into the game with a few really clear objectives," said Jeremy Gunn, The Knowles Family Director of Men's Soccer. "We wanted to get our sharpness back that was making us really special, and I think we did that well today."
Stanford struck first in the 23rd minute after Segal turned home Richmond's free kick, giving the forward his sixth goal of the year. Eight minutes later the Aztecs capitalized on a defensive miscue to level the score at 1-1.
The tie would last only 3:30, as Ryan volleyed home his eighth of the season in the 36th minute. Ludwick controlled a loose ball to Ryan, who turned and fired powerfully past the goalkeeper. Right before the break for half time, Wehan slotted home his third of the year, capitalizing on a lobbed pass from Cilley.
"We were sharp on the ball, we were crisp, and I always felt from the beginning that we were in a great position the way we were playing," continued Gunn. "On both sides of the ball, back to front, I was really pleased today."
Stanford outshot San Diego State by an 8-1 margin in the second half to close out the win.
The Cardinal returns to action on Saturday, April 10 at Oregon State. Kickoff is set for noon on Pac-12 Networks.
