STANFORD, Calif. – Stanford softball left the tying run at the plate and fell to No. 9/8 Arizona, 2-0 on Saturday at Boyd & Jill Smith Family Stadium. The Cardinal (22-8, 3-3 Pac-12) matched the Wildcats in hits with four, but three errors allowed both Arizona runs to score.
Emily Schultz worked a full-count walk to leadoff the bottom of the seventh, but the Cardinal was unable to capitalize. Alana Vawter struck out in a pinch-hit opportunity to end the game.
Despite being unable to provide the winning run at the plate, Vawter was outstanding in the circle on Saturday. She struck out four batters, while spacing out four hits and no walks over 7.0 innings. The sophomore did not allow a hit until the top of the fourth after an error extended the inning.
Arizona (22-5, 6-2 Pac-12) took a 1-0 lead in the fourth on a double to right field, but the scoring runner reached on an error. It added an insurance run in the top of the seventh, again thanks to an error. With two outs in the inning, an error at short gave enough time for the runner to score from third.
Next up for the Cardinal is a four-game series at Arizona State, April 9-11. The second game of the doubleheader will not count towards the Pac-12 standings, and all four matches will be available through the ASU Live Stream.
