NCAA Championships Open Friday

  • After a second-place finish at the Pac-12 Championships, including a victory in the varsity four, Stanford heads to the NCAA Championships this weekend in Sarasota, Florida.
  • The varsity four is seeded first nationally for its group, while the varsity eight and second varsity are seeded third and fourth, respectively.
  • Stanford opened its 2021 campaign in dominant fashion, sweeping California for a victory at the annual Big Row regatta. The varsity eight rolled to a time of 5:58, besting the Golden Bears top boat by seven seconds
  • The Cardinal continued against a pair of Pac-12 opponents in Los Angeles, USC and UCLA, on May 1, and rolled to wins in all four races, including a 13-second margin in the varsity eight.
  • Stanford had four players wth All-Pac-12 recognition, led by Newcomer of the Year Mathilda Kitzmann. Esther Briz Zamorano, Kelsey McGinley and Meg Saunders received All-Pac-12 first team honors. McGinley was also named on May 26 to the USRowing U23 National Team Camp in June.
  • Stanford has placed fourth in each of the last two NCAA Championships in 2018 and 2019. The varsity eight has posted five consecutive top-five finishes, while a win in the varsity four would be the first in program history.
  • Derek Byrnes is in his fifth season leading the program, and has led Stanford to a top-six NCAA finish in each of his three full seasons.
