EUGENE, Ore. – Stanford's Virginia Miller placed sixth in the women's javelin at the U.S. Olympic Track and Field Trials on Saturday,

Miller, a Stanford senior class president and recent graduate who will return for her final season of eligibility, threw a personal record of 175-10 (53.59 meters). She moves up to No. 4 on Stanford's all-time performers' list.

Miller was among three 2021 Stanford athletes to reach the U.S. Olympic Trials finals, joining Julia Heymach, who was sixth in the women's 1,500 and Keyshawn King, 12th in the men's triple jump.

Miller opened with her best throw, eclipsing her previous best by four feet. She was the second-highest collegian in the competition, though she was seventh at the NCAA Championships.

In the women's 10,000 final at Hayward Field, Elise Cranny '18 was second until leader Emily Sisson broke from the pack at the 8K mark. Cranny was unable to stay with Sisson and the effort caused her to drop to fourth. Cranny, who won the 5,000 earlier in the week and will compete in the Olympics in that event, finished in 31:35.22, with Sara Bei Hall ''05 in sixth (31:54.50) and Fiona O'Keeffe '20 was 20th in 33:03.09.

Miller's sixth place was matched by Stanford teammates Charles Hicks. Competing in the British trials in Manchester, England, Hicks was sixth in the men's 5,000 in 13:50.71. Hicks, 19, was a freshman in eligibility this season.

At the Barbados Championships in Cave Hill, recent Stanford graduate Aria Small won the women's long jump at 18-10 (5.74m). She competes in the triple jump on Sunday. In each event, she is short of the Olympic standard, which she needs to compete in Tokyo.

The U.S. Trials end Sunday with Grant Fisher '19, Garrett Heath '08, and Thomas Ratcliffe '20 racing in the 5,000 final at 10 a.m. Fisher has the Olympic standard and already will be an Olympian in the 10,000.
