Men's Rowing History

Updated June 9, 2026

On April 30, 1904, the Stanford men's rowing program made its intercollegiate debut in a dual against Cal at the Oakland Estuary. In the more than 120 years since, men's rowing has established itself as one of the great traditional programs among Stanford sports, and was the first West Coast team to enter the IRA National Championship, in 1912. The Stanford tradition continues, as illustrated by the success of Peter Chatain '22, who earned a bronze medal as part of the U.S. Eights in the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.
