STANFORD, Calif. - Zach Ryan and Andrew Thomas were both named first-team CoSIDA Academic All-Americans, announced Monday by the organization. Stanford is the nation's only program featuring two players on the first team.
Thomas now becomes a two-time honoree, earning second-team All-America status last season. The pair are only the third and fourth first-team Academic All-Americans in program history.
Also named a first-team All-American on the field this season, Ryan was named the Pac-12 Player of the Year after serving as the key cog to Stanford's offense all spring, leading the team with 10 goals and three assists for 23 points. He scored in nine of Stanford's 14 matches, including a season-best brace at rival California in February. He ranked second in the Pac-12 in both total goals and total points, while his four game-winning goals were first in the conference and third nationally, with none bigger than his overtime winner against No. 6 Washington to win the league championship. He also finished near the top-10 nationally in goals per game (0.71), points per game (1.64), total goals and total points. He is just shy of breaking into the program's top-10 lists for career goals and career points. Ryan earned his bachelor's degree in management science and engineering last month, boasting a 3.51 GPA.
One of the top goalkeepers in program history, Thomas concluded his career at Stanford this spring as a three-time member of the All-Pac-12 first team, a three-time All-Far West Region pick by the United Soccer Coaches, a three-time Pac-12 champion and an All-American in 2019. He ranks second in program history with a goals against average of 0.67, fourth in career shutouts (23) and fifth in career minutes played (5,222). His 172 career saves are eighth in the Stanford record books. Recently signing with Seattle Sounders FC, Thomas graduated from Stanford in June with a degree in engineering physics with a 4.051 GPA. He was also named the winner of the NCAA Elite 90 in 2019.
