Doms Hat Trick Powers Rout

STANFORD, Calif. – Junior Maya Doms recorded a hat trick, senior Abby Greubel added a brace and Stanford (2-0) scored seven total goals to rout CSUN (1-2) 7-0 on Thursday in the Cardinal's 2021 home opener from Cagan Stadium.

The multi-goal games are the first for Doms and Greubel in their careers. They are also the first for the Cardinal since Samantha Williams scored twice vs. Utah on March 5, 2021. The hat trick is the first for Stanford since Sophia Smith's vs. UCLA on November 6, 2019 in the College Cup semifinals, while the seven goals are the most for the Cardinal since defeating Prairie View A&M 15-0 on November 15, 2019.

"It was a great team performance," The Knowles Family Director of Women's Soccer Paul Ratcliffe said. "We scored some fantastic goals and I thought the spirit of the team was very strong"

Doms got the scoring started with a goal in the 11th minute, receiving a cross from Williams right at the penalty spot and beating CSUN keeper Amanda Delgado. She would extend the lead to 2-0 in the 16th minute after heading home a cross from Sierra Enge – the first of two assists from the Cardiff, Calif. native on the night.

Enge played nearly an identical ball to Belle Briede in the 27th minute and Briede headed it home for her sixth career goal to push the Cardinal advantage to 3-0.

Greubel capped the strong first half for the Cardinal with her first goal of the night, and second of the season, less than 30 seconds after Briede scored. The native of Santa Ana, Calif. beat Delgado to a ball just wide of the box, heel-flicked past the keeper and promptly buried her shot in the far corner.

The Cardinal, which managed 14 shots in the opening stanza, took a 4-0 lead into halftime.

Doms completed the hat trick in the 63rd minute, heading home a cross from freshman Andrea Kitahata to make it 5-0 Stanford.

With the three goals, Doms now owns four through two games in 2021 – matching her output over 24 games played as a freshman in 2019. Her career goals mark now stands at 10.

"Doms is having a breakout season already," Ratcliffe said. "She is an incredible talent and has scored some incredible goals. She is very good in the midfield, she's breaking lines and finishing our chances."

Kitahata added one more assist to finish with two points on the evening, sending a low cross across the top of the box and finding Greubel for her second goal of the game in the 69th minute. With two on Thursday night, Greubel has now scored three goals over the first two contests this year.

Putting the finishing touches on the impressive showing, sophomore Julia Leontini took a free kick from about 25 yards out in the 79th minute and curled it just inside the far post to beat the second-half keeper Elizabeth Bornhauser.

Stanford took 15 shots in the second half, ultimately finishing the game with 29, including 17 on goal.

Senior Katie Meyer got the start in goal for the Cardinal, playing the first 45 minutes of the combined shutout. Stanford's defense did not allow a shot in the first half. Sophomore Ryan Campbell fulfilled the goalkeeping duties in the second half, making one save on four Matador shots to ensure the clean sheet.

The Cardinal will return to action on Sunday when it hosts San Diego State at 1 p.m
