Gameday Hub: Washington State

Stanford heads to Washington State for a showdown with the Cougars on Saturday afternoon. Both teams are 3-3 overall and 2-2 in Pac-12 play.

Stanford and Washington State meet for the 71st time on Saturday, with the Cardinal owning a 40-29-1 record against the Cougars all-time.

Stanford looks to snap a four-game losing streak to Washington State, who won the last matchup in Pullman, 49-22, in 2019. David Shaw is 5-4 against WSU, while Nick Rolovich makes his debut against Stanford.

Saturday already marks Stanford’s fifth road game of the season. The Cardinal is the only Power Five program that will have played five games away from home in the season’s first seven weeks.

Stanford is one of five programs (joined by Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia and Iowa) with multiple wins over Top-15 teams so far this season. The Cardinal defeated No. 14 USC on Sept. 11 and No. 3 Oregon on Oct. 2. Of that group, only Stanford (No. 3 Oregon), Georgia (No. 3 Clemson) and Iowa (No. 4 Penn State) have wins over Top-5 opponents. The two programs were set to meet at Stanford Stadium in 2020, but the game was canceled due to COVID-19 testing and contact tracing numbers at Washington State.

In its first six games of the season, Stanford has already played four ranked opponents. The Cardinal is 2-2 in those matchups. Stanford was one of three teams nationally scheduled to play six Top-25 opponents according to the AP Preseason Top 25.
