Abas, Griffith Place in Vegas

LAS VEGAS - Shane Griffith finished as the runner-up and Jaden Abas placed fifth to lead Stanford at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational on Saturday.

With its two placewinners, Stanford was 13th as a team, totaling 41 points.

Griffith reached the finals with a 5-4 decision over No. 9 Carson Kharchla of Ohio State in the semifinals. Ranked No. 4 at 165 pounds, Griffith dropped a 6-2 decision to No. 2 Evan Wick of Cal Poly in the finals. He is now 9-2 on the season.

Abas, who is No. 6 nationally, began the day with back-to-back wins in the consolation bracket at 149 pounds. He posted a 6-1 decision over No. 31 Cory Crooks of Oregon State and a 9-4 decision against No. 26 Michael Blockhus of Minnesota. He then fell to No. 4 Yahya Thomas of Northwestern, 7-4, and dropped into the fifth-place match. Oklahoma's Mitch Moore was leading Abas in the bout but had to default due to injury, giving Abas the win. The redshirt sophomore moves to 10-3 on the season.

Sophomore Charlie Darracott and redshirt junior Tyler Eischens both fell in their opening matches on Saturday. Darracott lost a 14-5 major decision to No. 15 Will Lewan of Michigan at 157 pounds. Eischens was pinned in 4:50 by No. 20 Gerrit Nijenhuis of Purdue at 174 pounds.

Up next, Stanford travels to the Reno Tournament of Champions on Dec. 19 to close out 2021.
