HOUSTON, Texas – Stanford men's swimming and diving opened the Pac-12 Men's Swimming Championships with a pair of podium finishes in the relays, as well as a NCAA qualifying time, Sunday at the University of Houston Natatorium.

The Cardinal opened the meet with an outstanding performance in the 800 free relay, as it finished second by only 85-hundreths of a second. The team of Luke Maurer, Preston Forst, Mason Gonzalez and Grant Shoults swam a NCAA A standard of 6:12.83 – a mark that is only 17-hundreths of a second off the school record of 6:12.66.

Stanford trade places with California for much of the race, before the Bears late in the final stages of the race. The second-place finish landed the quartet on the podium.

Less than 60 minutes later, Stanford took third in the 400 medley relay. The team of Leon McAlister, Daniel Roy, Ethan Hu and Jonathan Affeld swam a provisional mark of 3:06.14.

The Pac-12 Men's Swimming Championships will continue tomorrow, with the prelims and finals of the 500 free, 200 IM, 50 free and 200 free relay. Stanford is second in the team race with 173 points.
