SAN FRANCISCO – Mathilda Kitzmann led four with Pac-12 recognition on Thursday, as the freshman was named the Pac-12 Women's Rowing Newcomer of the Year. Esther Briz Zamorano, Kelsey McGinley and Meg Saunders earned All-Pac-12 accolades for their strong performances this season.
Kitzmann is Stanford's second straight Newcomer of the Year winner, and the program's third recipient all-time, joining McGinley (2019) and Abby Loughrey (2003). She rowed in the varsity eight in every regatta, rowing in the three seat in the first two regattas and in the four seat for the Pac-12 championships, where Stanford took second.
Stanford has had at least three all-conference selections in each season since 2014, with Saunders earning her second award from the Pac-12 after an all-conference nod in 2018.
After rowing in the five seat for the opening two regattas, Briz Zamorano moved to the six seat for the Pac-12 Championships. McGinley stroked the varsity eight all season, while Saunders rowed in the bow for the Pac-12 regatta and the two seat for the first two events this spring.
McGinley also earned a call to the USRowing Under-23 National Team Selection Camp, which was announced Wednesday.
The team concludes the season this weekend at the NCAA Championships in Sarasota, Florida.
