STANFORD, Calif. - Recognized for their excellence in the classroom, in addition to on their respective playing surfaces, six Stanford student-athletes have been named CoSIDA Academic All-Americans. Brooke Forde was named the Academic All-America Women's At-Large Team member of the year, and was one of two first team Academic All-Americans, joining Emily Arbuthnott. Tyler Abramson and Shane Griffith were second team honorees, while Axel Geller and Alex Liang earned third team nods.
Forde won the first Olympic medal of her career at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics as part of the Team USA swimming relay pool. She anchored the United States to the second-fastest time in the 4x200m free relay prelims (7:47.57). A member of two NCAA championship teams, Forde is a four-time NCAA national champion including the 2021 400 individual medley title and 15-time NCAA All-American overall. She is a four-time Pac-12 champion and has been a member of three Pac-12 championship teams. Forde is a three-time CSCAA Scholar All-American and three-time Pac-12 All-Academic pick including the Pac-12 Scholar-Athlete of the Year. She was the 2018 Pac-12 Women's Swimming Newcomer of the Year.
Forde is the fourth Stanford student-athlete to win women's at-large team member of the year, and the third since 2018. She joins Makenzie Fischer (2019, water polo), Katie Ledecky (2018, swimming) and Sandra Birch (1991, tennis) with the award.
Arbuthnott joins Birch as the only three-time Academic All-American in program history. Recently graduating with a degree in economics and boasting a 4.19 GPA, was named the 2021 Pac-12 Scholar-Athlete of the Year and finished her time on The Farm as a two-time NCAA team champion, and three-time Pac-12 champion. She was named an ITA All-American in both singles and doubles as a sophomore and earned the Northwest Region Most Improved Senior in 2020.
A management, science and engineering major, Abramson earns his first Academic All-America honor, featuring a dominant season in the pool matched with a 3.60 GPA. Named first-team All-America by the ACWPC each of the last two seasons, Abramson led the team in goals, shots and points during the 2020 season and has helped lead Stanford to three straight NCAA Tournament appearances, including a national title in 2019 and runner-up in 2018. Returning for a fifth season, Abramson has been named ACWPC All-Academic each of his four years on The Farm and is a three-time All-MPSF honoree.
The 2021 NCAA champion at 165 pounds, Griffith is a two-time Pac-12 Wrestler of the Year and boasts a 40-1 career record in two seasons on The Farm. The Westwood, New Jersey native carries a 3.54 GPA in science, technology and society with a minor in International Relations. He becomes just the third Stanford wrestler in program history to earn CoSIDA Academic All-America recognition.
A 2019 All-American, Geller helped lead Stanford men's tennis to its first Pac-12 championship since 2015, and its first outright title since 2003. Playing in the top singles position, Geller earned his third All-Pac-12 honor, and second selection to the first team. The Buenos Aires, Argentina native majors in economics and ended the year with a 3.82 GPA.
Liang earned the first CoSIDA Academic All-America honor after a dominant senior season. The Palo Alto, Calif., native was named the inaugural Pac-12 Men's Swimming and Diving Scholar-Athlete of the Year, and was named a second-team All-American in the 400 IM. He was just shy of reaching the consolation final in the 200 IM and 200 fly at the NCAA Championships, in addition to being named to the Pac-12 Academic Honor Roll. He graduated in May with a degree in Economics.
With the six at-large selections, Stanford has combined for 22 Academic All-America awards this season.
