STANFORD, Calif. – Former Notre Dame coach Mike Johnson has been named assistant coach for the Stanford women's volleyball program, as announced Friday by head coach Kevin Hambly.
"I am very excited to welcome Mike, Liz, and their family to The Farm," said Hambly. "Mike is a pro and brings tremendous experience to our program. He is a proven trainer and recruiter. As a head coach, he has elevated programs to places they have never been in their history."
Johnson spent the previous four seasons at the helm of the program at Notre Dame. He led the Fighting Irish to back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances (2019, 2020), including its first NCAA postseason win since 2005. He replaces Gary Mano, who stepped down from the position following the conclusion of the 2021 season.
"I am thrilled to be joining the phenomenal staff and players at Stanford," said Johnson. "I believe in Coach Hambly and I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity. My family and I can't wait to get to Palo Alto and work in tireless pursuit to bring another national championship to The Farm."
Johnson has 10 years of experience as a head coach, including stints at Xavier (2010-14) and Austin Peay (2009). He has amassed a career record of 187-105 as a head coach.
Johnson produced three consecutive runner-up finishes in the Atlantic 10 Conference championship, marking a first for Xavier. His Musketeer squads produced seven AVCA honorable mention All-Americans. In Johnson's one year as head coach at Austin Peay his squad recorded a 22-9 overall mark and was 15-3 in the Ohio Valley Conference - its best league standing in 17 years.
Johnson served as the associate head coach at Notre Dame during the 2015-17 campaigns. He has also spent time as an assistant and an associate head coach at Cal Poly (2006-08) and an assistant at the University of Washington (2004).
"As an assistant, Mike has played an integral role in helping programs get to the highest levels of the sport," added Hambly. "Mike will immediately be an incredible asset to our program and continue to be so for years to come."
A native of Kahaluu, Hawaii, Johnson graduated from Washington in 2003 with a degree in chemical engineering. He is married to the former Liz Grajewski, an All-Big Ten gymnast at Iowa. They have three daughters, Jamie, Harper and Nell, along with a son, Noah.
