Mike Johnson joined the Stanford staff as an assistant coach in January 2022. He enters his third season with the program in 2024.
In his first two seasons on The Farm, Johnson has helped lead Stanford to a pair of Pac-12 titles and two NCAA regional finals. Stanford has produced five AVCA All-Americans, who have collected seven total honors, two Pac-12 Player of the Year awards (Kendall Kipp), two Pac-12 Setter of the Year awards (Kami Miner) and two Pac-12 Libero of the Year awards (Elena Oglivie) with Johnson on the sidelines. Stanford has also had three College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-Americans, earning four total honors.
Johnson spent the previous four seasons at the helm of the program at Notre Dame. He led the Fighting Irish to back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances (2019, 2020), including its first NCAA postseason win since 2005.
Johnson has 10 years of experience as a head coach, including stints at Xavier (2010-14) and Austin Peay (2009). He amassed a career record of 187-105 as a head coach.
Johnson produced three consecutive runner-up finishes in the Atlantic 10 Conference championship, marking a first for Xavier. His Musketeer squads produced seven AVCA honorable mention All-Americans. In Johnson's one year as head coach at Austin Peay his squad recorded a 22-9 overall mark and was 15-3 in the Ohio Valley Conference - its best league standing in 17 years.
Johnson served as the associate head coach at Notre Dame during the 2015-17 campaigns. He has also spent time as an assistant and an associate head coach at Cal Poly (2006-08) and an assistant at the University of Washington (2004).
A native of Kahaluu, Hawaii, Johnson graduated from Washington in 2003 with a degree in chemical engineering. He is married to the former Liz Grajewski, an All-Big Ten gymnast at Iowa. They have three daughters, Jamie, Harper and Nell, along with a son, Noah.
