Two wins in 2022

STANFORD, Calif - The Cardinal started 2022 with two dual meet wins, defeating Harvard by a score of 162 to 127 and Pacific 166 to 33 on Friday. Stanford claimed 10 victories in the 16 total events, including multiple event wins from Andrei Minakov, Grant Shoults, and Ron Polonsky.

The meet started with the 200 medley relay and the Crimson snagging the top spot, but Stanford claimed second, third and fourth in the event. Following the relay, Grant Shoults won the 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 9:03.21, a season-best for the fifth-year senior by 26 seconds. Shoults went on to win the 500-yard free as well with a time of 4:23.78.

Andrei Minakov notched his first win in the 50-yard free, clocking a 19.56. The sensational freshman also won the 100 fly with a 46.33. Ethan Hu took second place in the event with a 47.61.

Ron Polonsky grabbed his first victory in the 100-yard breastroke with a time of 54.29, beating out Daniel Roy by 0.01. Roy took second place with a 54.30. Polonsky's second win came in the 400-yard I.M. where the freshman swam a 3:50.36. Stanford claimed the top-four spots in the event, with Rick Mihm taking second, Alex Liang grabbing third, and Matt Fenlon finishing fourth.

Leon MacAlister continued his dominance in the backstroke, winning the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 46.70. Stanford claimed also one, two, three finish in the 200-yard breast, with Daniel Roy, Ethan Dang, and Jon Cook all taking the top-three spots.

Stanford's swimmers are back in action next week to face Arizona State on January 21 in a Pac-12 showdown at the Avery Aquatic Center while the men's divers will compete again in the Bruin Diving Invite over the next two days.
