Bounce Back

STANFORD, Calif. – A fall by Shane Griffith proved to be the difference as No. 17 Stanford defeated CSU Bakersfield, 20-17, Thursday, in Burnham Pavilion.

Stanford improved to 4-3 overall and 2-1 in the Pac-12 Conference, while CSU Bakersfield dropped to 2-7 overall and 0-2 in the conference. The Cardinal and Roadrunners each won five bouts, but Griffith's fall put Stanford in the win column.

The dual began at 149 pounds, where Jaden Abas, who is ranked 12th nationally, registered a 16-5 major decision over Josh Brown to give the Cardinal and early lead in the team score. Abas moves to 15-5 on the season, including 4-2 in duals.

Sophomore Charlie Darracott added to Stanford's lead with a close 9-7 decision over Brock Rogers at 157 pounds. Darracott earns his third dual win and is now 14-10 on the year.

At 165 pounds, Griffith's fall in 2:38 over Auggie Garcia marked the fifth pin of the season for the redshirt junior. He improves to 13-2 overall and 5-1 in duals. He now has 14 career pins - the most on Stanford's active roster.

Tyler Eischens came up short in a 10-8 sudden victory decision by Albert Urias at 174 pounds, while Nick Addison dropped a 10-2 major decision to Jacob Hansen to cut Stanford's lead to 13-7.

Sophomore Nick Stemmet stopped the Roadrunner win streak, momentarily. The 197-pounder posted an 8-3 decision over Josh Loomer and now leads the team with 17 wins on the season.

CSU Bakersfield won the next three bouts to take a 17-16 lead in the dual with only 141 pounds remaining. Real Woods then dominated No. 27 Angelo Martinoni in a 14-3 major decision in which Woods had 3:41 of riding time. Woods remains perfect on the season at 11-0.

Stanford continues its three-match homestand on Saturday, Feb. 19 as it hosts Cal Poly at 5 p.m. in Burnham Pavilion. Admission is free.
