Card Closes Weekend Strong

Don Kirby results Opens in a new window Husky Classic results Opens in a new window

THE STANFORD TRACK and field team closed out a productive and sometimes spectacular weekend with Keyshawn King's victory in the triple jump at the Don Kirby Elite Invitational indoor meet at the Albuquerque Convention Center on Saturday.

Beforehand, there was plenty of buzz within the program after performances Friday night that included Ky Robinson breaking facility and meet records while leading a trio of Cardinal to three of the five fastest times in school history in the 5,000 meters at the Husky Classic in Seattle. And Max McKhann broke a 23-year-old school record in the 35-pound weight throw to win at Don Kirby.

Those Friday performances also included another school record, this in the women's mile. Julia Heymach, an Olympic Trials 1,500 finalist, clocked 4:31.35 for Stanford's fastest time on a regulation (200-meter) indoor track, at the David Hemery Valentine Invitational at Boston University's Track and Tennis Center.

Heymach placed eighth overall and was second among collegians in a strong race won by Canadian Olympian Lucia Stafford in 4:24.42.

Heymach's time made her the 24th-fastest collegian of all-time on an indoor regulation track. Elise Cranny still has the fastest indoor mile in Stanford history. Her 4:31.29 from 2018 was run on University of Washington's 307-meter flat track, an oversized track for record purposes. However, Ella Donaghu's record on a 200-meter track, 4:33.71 in 2020, fell to Heymach.

Heymach now owns Stanford records in the mile (regulation-sized track) indoors and 1,500 outdoors (4:04.84), the latter from her sixth-place finish at the Olympic Trials last year.

Binghamton's Emily MacKay (4:30.94), Heymach, and Indianapolis' Berenice Cleyet-Merle (4:31.99) are now the three fastest collegians this season and all achieved those times in the same race.

Heymach's quarter splits were 1:06.72, 1:08.89, 1:08.84, and 1:06.90, and closed with a 32.85 200.

On Saturday, Stanford athletes combined for seven personal bests (six at Don Kirby), three Stanford indoor top-10 list additions or improvements, and one addition to the freshmen top-five list.

King drew ever-so-close to the Stanford indoor record, jumping 52-4 (15.95m), just 5 ¼ inches off Darian Brooks' indoor mark, which doubles as the school absolute record, including indoors and outdoors. It also came within two inches of King's outdoor best, from last year's Stanford Invitational. King went on to reach the finals of the Olympic Trials before the year was through.

King led through four rounds of Saturday's competition, unleashing his longest jump on his fifth attempt to secure the victory.

In the women's 60, Kennedy Gamble recorded a personal best of 7.49, placing her at No. 7 at Stanford all-time, in the semifinals. She was sixth in the final at 7.52.

In the men's shot put, Sam Liokumovich recorded a PB of 59-8 (18.20m), strengthening his hold on No. 4 at Stanford all-time indoors.

At the Husky Classic, Ellie Deligianni was second in the women's 800 in 2:06.87 and Audrey Suarez (in main photo) ran moved to No. 3 on Stanford's freshmen list in the women's mile, running 4:47.12.
