Card Tops Mustangs

STANFORD, Calif. – Bonus points by Nick Stemmet and Tyler Eischens helped propel No. 16 Stanford to a 23-14 win over No. 14 Cal Poly, Saturday, in Burnham Pavilion.

Stanford won six of the 10 bouts to improve to 5-3 overall and 3-1 in the Pac-12, while Cal Poly drops to 4-3 overall and 2-3 in the conference. 

The dual began at 174 pounds where Eischens, who is ranked No. 32 nationally, gave Stanford the 5-0 lead with a dominating 16-0 technical fall in 4:15 over Nathan Tausch. Eischens led 6-0 after the first. He registered a reversal to start the second and then turned Tausch for a pair of four-point near falls to end it. The redshirt junior improves to 16-9 on the season and 5-3 in duals. 

Stemmet pushed the Stanford lead to 11-4 with a fall in 6:02 over Trent Tracy at 197 pounds. It was the fourth fall of the season for the sophomore, who leads the team with 18 wins this season.
 


Cal Poly won the next two bouts to momentarily tie the dual score at 11-11. 

Ranked No. 33 nationally at 133 pounds, Jackson DiSario secured a 7-2 decision over Abe Hinrichsen to put the Cardinal back on top. Leading 2-0 afrer one, DiSario chose down to start the second. He scored back-to-back escapes as Hinrichsen took injury time, giving DiSario choice. Another takedown and 3:24 of riding time won it for the junior, who improves to 17-7 on the year.

Redshirt junior Real Woods then shut out No. 30 Lawrence Saenz, 5-0, to remain undefeated on the year. He scored a takedown in the first, an escape and was awarded a point for an illegal move by Saenz in the second and finished with 4:08 of riding time. Ranked No. 4 in the nation, Woods is now 12-0 overall and 4-0 in duals. 

In a battle of ranked opponents, No. 12 Jaden Abas turned in a gritty 6-4 decision over No. 16 Legend Lamer. He scored all six of his points in the opening period and now has five wins over ranked opponents this season. The redshirt sophomore is 16-5 overall and 5-2 in duals.

Sophomore Charlie Darracott rounded out the scoring for the Cardinal with a 6-4 decision over Brawley Lamer. Darracott scored a takedown with 15 seconds remaining in the bout to improve to 15-10 overall. 
 


The final match of the night featured No. 3 Shane Griffith versus No. 1 Evan Wick. Griffith trailed 2-1 going into the final period. Wick, who had clinched riding time, scored an escape and another takedown in the final frame. 

Stanford closes out the regular season on Sunday, hosting Oregon State at 2 p.m. in Maples Pavilion. The dual will air on Pac-12 Bay Area. Admission is free.
