STANFORD, Calif. – No. 16 Stanford closed out the regular season with a 30-9 loss to Oregon State, Sunday, at Maples Pavilion.
The Cardinal won just three of the 10 bouts to finish the year 5-4 overall and 3-2 in the Pac-12. Oregon State improved to 8-3 on the year and 4-1 in the conference.
Sophomore Nick Stemmet opened the dual with a 6-2 decision over Ryan Reyes at 197 pounds. Leading 2-1 after two periods, Stemmet scored a reversal to start the third. He earned a point for an illegal move by Reyes and finished with 1:17 of riding time.
The two squared off again in an extra match after the conclusion of the dual, where Reyes edged Stemmet, 7-6. The Yorkville, Illinois, native is now 19-10 on the season and finished 5-4 in dual competition.
Ranked No. 12 nationally, Jaden Abas fought from behind to register a 9-4 decision over No. 26 Cory Crooks at 149 pounds. Tied 2-2 going into the final frame, Crooks chose neutral to start the third. After a Crooks's takedown, Abas made it 4-3 with an escape. He registered a takedown with just over a minute remaining and then turned Crooks for four near fall to seal the win. Abas moves to 17-5 on the year and finished 6-2 in duals.
Redshirt junior Shane Griffith rebounded from a loss on Saturday with a 6-1 decision over Matthew Olguin at 165 pounds. Ranked No. 3 in the nation, Griffith used a pair of takedowns, an escape and 1:57 of riding time to pick up the win. He is now 14-3 overall and 6-2 in duals.
Stanford now turns its attention to the Pac-12 Championships. The conference tournament will be held at Arizona State on Sunday, March 6 with berths into the NCAA Championships on the line.
