STANFORD, Calif. – Freshman Ty Uber tossed four scoreless innings in his first collegiate start, guiding No. 6 Stanford (3-1) to a 5-0 shutout victory over Santa Clara (1-3) on Tuesday night from Sunken Diamond.
The shutout victory is the second in four games for the Cardinal this season.
Uber allowed just two hits and one walk while striking out five over his four frames, improving to 1-0 with the victory in a predetermined staff day on the mound. The native of Cameron Park, Calif. threw 66 pitches, including 42 for strikes.
Sophomore Joey Dixon contributed two scoreless innings, following by single frames from senior Cody Jensen, junior Quinn Mathews and freshman Braden Montgomery. Mathews struck out the side in order in the eighth.
Stanford's offense put pressure on Santa Clara all night, eventually scoring five runs on nine hits while leaving 12 runners on base.
The Cardinal stranded six through the first three innings, including the bases loaded in the bottom of the third, before breaking through with three runs in the fourth.
Junior Brock Jones came to the plate with the bases loaded and two out, delivering a bases-clearing double into right-center field to plate his first three runs of the year.
Jones, who finished 2 for 3 with three RBIs and two walks, added a triple in the eighth inning.
Leading 3-0 headed to the bottom of the fifth, Stanford tacked on two more in the inning to extend the lead to 5-0. Montgomery and junior Adam Crampton contributed the run-scoring singles to bring home two unearned runs following an error charged to Bronco center fielder Coleman Brigman.
With an RBI and a run scored as part of a 1 for 3 night on Tuesday, Montgomery is now hitting .500 (4 for 8) with four runs scored, two homers and seven RBIs in the last two games.
Senior Alex Reelfs was saddled with the loss for Santa Clara after allowing two runs on three hits and four walks over 3 1/3 innings. The decision dropped Reelfs to 0-1 on the season.
Stanford will now prepare to hit the road for the first time this season, traveling to the Round Rock Classic for games against Louisiana, No. 2 Arkansas and Indiana.
