REDWOOD CITY, Calif - In the second weekend of the spring season, Stanford kept the momentum rolling with two more regatta victories. The Cardinal won the Jeremy McIntyre Memorial Team Race at home and also took first place in the Phebe Corckran King Women's Team Race in Charleston, South Carolina.
In the two day event at home, the first day lacked a strong wind making for variable conditions. The second day brought sunshine and a stronger northerly wind later in the day that allowed for better racing.
The Cardinal finished the day with a 14-1 record, winning all but the first round matchup against UC Santa Barbara. Skippers Jack Parkin, Wiley Rogers, and Justin Lim were at the helm while the crew consisted of Sammy Pickell, AnaClare Sole, Mathew Hogan, and Laurel Foster.
In the 15 total races in the regatta, Stanford took first and second 13 times on the way to the team victory.
In Charleston, this marked the first time that the Phebe Corckran King regatta featured team racing. On the first day of the event, teams were greeted by 10-15 knot northeasterly wind that continued throughout the day.
Stanford got off to a strong start with Dartmouth and Cornell keeping pace. After the first day, The Cardinal held the lead with the two Ivy League teams trailing with just a single loss for each.
Stanford maintained the lead throughout the second day that featured lighter breezes and ideal team racing conditions with flat water and limited current. The Cardinal remained perfect through three rounds of racing before Dartmouth and Cornell took races in the final round.
Despite dropping two races, Stanford held on to take the victory with a record of 19-2 over the weekend. Michelle Lahrkamp, Stephanie Houck, Hallie Schiffman, and Hannah Freeman featured as skippers for Stanford while Grace Austin, Gwendolyn Donahue, Patricia Gerli, and Lauren Taylor made up the crew.
The Cardinal have now claimed four first place finishes over the first two weekends of action in the spring sailing season. Next up, Stanford will be back in Charleston, South Carolina for the Bob Bavier Team Race from March 5-6.
