Win in Davis

STANFORD, Calif. - The Cardinal earned its second win of the weekend and second 20 goal game in a row, taking down UC Davis 21-9.

The Cardinal improve with another win to 3-4 on the season. UC Davis drops to 3-3 on the year.

Like against California, Stanford started hot on offense and did not look back. Four different scorers found the back of the net in the first period, including two strikes each for Katy Gilbert and Ailish Kelly

The Stanford defense held Davis to two goals in three of the four quarters, including the first period.

Stanford had six different goal scorers on the day with Ali Baiocco leading the way after putting six in the back of the net. The fifth-year attack player tallied at least six goals in a game for the sixth time in her career and first time this season.

In the second quarter, it was more offense for the Cardinal. Five more goals during the period extended the lead to seven at the break, with Stanford leading 11-4.

The offense benefited from an opportunistic defense that started at the back. Kara Rahaim earned the victory in the cage and racked up seven saves on the day. The Cardinal also forced twice as many turnovers as they committed, taking the ball away from the Aggies 16 times during the game.

Emma Capanna and Caroline Mondiello led the defense in caused turnovers as each defender forced two. Capanna and Mondiello also corralled three ground balls each, while Ailish Kelly led the Cardinal in ground balls with four.

The third and fourth quarter followed the same pattern as the first two, with the Cardinal tallying 10 more goals while only allowing five the other way.

Ailish Kelly, Galen Lew, and Katy Gilbert tied for second on the team in scoring as each player scored three goals to help keep the momentum in favor of the Cardinal throughout the game. Caitlin Chicoski added two goals of her own and Jay Browne chipped in a goal and an assist.

Liana McDonnell also recorded a goal, making it three goals in the last four games for the junior midfielder.

Ashley Humphrey tallied a goal, but her main output was assists against the Aggies. The super sophomore recorded five assists for the fourth time this season and pushed her assist total to an NCAA-leading 31.

Stanford will be back in action on Friday, March 18 to resume Pac-12 play at Cagan Stadium against ASU.
