FEDERAL WAY, Wash. - The Cardinal carried the momentum from day one into day two, finding podium finishes in all but one event. Preston Forst captured the event title in the 500 free with a time of 4:12.06, the third-fastest time in program history.
Stanford featured 11 individual swimmers in point scoring positions entering the finals portion of day two. Seven of those 11 were in the A final, scoring between 20 and 11 points from first to eighth place.
Forst was joined on the podium by Grant Shoults who claimed bronze in the 500 free. Andrew Matejka earned 11 points for the Cardinal in the event as well, grabbing eighth place overall.
In the 200 I.M., Ron Polonsky led the way for Stanford. The freshman Olympian took third overall, out reaching a California swimmer for the podium spot by one one-hundredth of a second and a time of 1:40.71.
Jonny Affeld and Rick Mihm were in the A final as well, taking home sixth and eighth for 13 and 11 points respectively. Alex Liang and Shane Blinkman scored points for Stanford in the B final, taking home tenth and 12th place overall.
In the 50 free, Andrei Minakov swam a season best 19.06 to claim second place. Luke Maurer had an impressive showing in the B final, taking the top spot with a 19.40.
The 200 free relay capped off the evening, and Stanford finished fourth overall in the event. The team of Andrei Minakov, Jonny Affeld, Rick Mihm, and Luke Maurer combined for a time of 1:16.74.
The Cardinal is back at the King County Aquatic Center tomorrow for the third day of competition, featuring the 400 I.M., 100 fly, 200 free, 100 breast, 100 back, and the 400-medley relay.
