STANFORD, Calif. - No. 1 Stanford cruised in its MPSF opener on Sunday afternoon, defeating No. 10 Arizona State 22-9 at Avery Aquatic Center.
Playing its first match since earning the nation's top ranking, Stanford (12-1, 1-0 MPSF) extended its winning streak to eight and received goals from 11 different players in a controlled effort from start to finish.
Hannah Constandse and Ryann Neushul led the way with four goals apiece, Jewel Roemer contributed nine assists and the Cardinal converted 7-of-8 power play opportunities.
The Cardinal owned a 37-19 shot advantage and put the game away early, building commanding leads of 8-1 after the first period and 15-5 at halftime.
Leading 3-1, Stanford ripped off seven unanswered goals, with Neushul's third goal of the contest making it 10-1 at the 5:44 mark of the second period.
Makenzie Fischer, who last weekend became Stanford's all-time leading goal scorer, gave the Cardinal its first double-digit lead seconds before halftime at 15-5.
Stanford's largest lead came at 22-8 with 2:44 remaining in the game when Madison Stamen, making her first appearance of the season, scored her first goal.
Stanford remains idle until March 19, when it squares off against Harvard at La Jolla High School in San Diego.
