STANFORD, Calif. – In the first season of Mountain Pacific Sports Federation fencing, two of the conference's major awards went to Stanford athletes.
Haley Koo, a sophomore, was named MPSF Women's Fencer of the Year and freshman Draper Dayton was named Men's Newcomer of the Year.
Koo captured the first MPSF title in foil, won the NCAA West Regional, and placed 18th in the National Championships. Overall, she collected a 55-27 (.671) overall record. At Notre Dame for nationals, Koo was announced as the Elite 90 winner for having the highest cumulative grade-point average among all fencers at the competition.
Dayton advanced to the national championships and placed 20th in foil, helping the Cardinal to a 12th-place team finish. Dayton took fifth in the regionals and completed the season with a 28-29 (.491) record.
Other MPSF award winners are UC San Diego's Shawn Kim, Men's Fencer of the Year, and UCSD's Rafaella Gomes, Women's Newcomer of the Year.
