Mathews Tabbed National Player of the Week

National Players of the Week Opens in a new window

STANFORD, Calif. - Junior Quinn Mathews has been selected as one of Collegiate Baseball's national players of the week after posting a win and a save in a three-game series win at then-No. 3 Oregon State.

Mathews, who was originally slated to start Saturday's game two, closed out a 1-0 shutout on Friday by working a 1-2-3 10th inning with two strikeouts. The save was the first of Mathews' career.

Mathews did not pitch on Saturday, but returned on Sunday to strike out a career-high tying 11 batters over seven relief innings. The native of Aliso Viejo, Calif. entered the game with the bases loaded and nobody out in the third inning before taking the Cardinal the rest of the way. Mathews, who threw 120 pitches, struck out two in a 1-2-3 eighth inning before striking out the side in order in the ninth to collect the victory and move to 4-1 on the season. All told, Mathews faced one over the minimum with eight strikeouts over his final four innings of work.

Over two appearances in the series, Mathews allowed one run over eight innings with 13 strikeouts.

The Collegiate Baseball Player of the Week selection is the first of Mathews' career.
