SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Five different Cardinal hitters hit home runs as No. 4 Stanford (34-14) scored a season-high 19 runs on 18 hits in a 19-0 shutout victory over Santa Clara (24-26) on Tuesday night from Stephen Schott Stadium.
Stanford has now won nine consecutive games, 12 of the last 14, 15 of 18 and 20 of 24.
Sophomore Drew Bowser got the party started with a grand slam to highlight a five-run first inning. The grand slam was the fourth of the season for Stanford and was Bowser's seventh round-tripper of the year.
Leading 7-0 after three innings, the Cardinal tacked on five more runs in the fourth to run the advantage to 12-0. Braden Montgomery and Kody Huff hit back-to-back home runs to start the inning before junior Brock Jones connected for a two-run shot – his 13th of the season. With one on Tuesday, Montgomery and Huff have 13 and eight homers, respectively.
Stanford put the finishing touches on the runaway victory in the seventh, scoring seven runs on four hits – including a three-run home run from Brett Barrera. The home run was Barrera's eighth of the season.
The five home runs matched a season high for the Cardinal, matching the output from a game against UC Davis on May 3.
Freshman Trevor Haskins collected his first career hit in the seventh inning – shooting an RBI-double into left-center field. Fifth-year player Joe Lomuscio also delivered in the inning, punching a two-RBI single into left field as part of a 2 for 2 night.
Sophomore Tommy Troy led the offense with three hits, finishing 3 for 5 with three doubles and two runs scored while hitting eighth in the order.
Bowser and Barrera each posted five RBIs, a pair of hits and two runs scored.
Overshadowed by the offensive outpouring, six Cardinal pitchers combined to toss a three-hit shutout – Stanford's ninth shutout win of the year. The nine shutouts are the second-most in the nation this year, and are the fifth most in Stanford history.
Sophomore Tommy O'Rourke got the start and picked up the win after tossing the first two shutout frames. The victory moved O'Rourke to 2-5 on the season.
Max Meier was first out of the bullpen, allowing one hit with a strikeout over two innings of work. Justin Moore followed with two shutout innings, striking out a pair, before handing the ball to Ryan Bruno for one inning. Bruno struck out two before passing the baton to Montgomery in the eighth. Montgomery struck out the side and Cody Jensen closed the door in the ninth.
Stanford will conclude the regular season this week, welcoming USC to Sunken Diamond for a three-game series in Pac-12 play starting on Thursday at 6 p.m.
