Started Off Strong

SARASOTA, Fla. – The No. 2 Cardinal started its time at the 2022 NCAA Championships off on a high note, finishing first in each of its qualifying heats Friday morning at Nathan Benderson Park. Stanford won each of the morning's races with times at least four seconds faster than the field of competition.

The Cardinal is one of five programs with all three boats moving onto the AB semifinals without repechage racing, alongside No. 1 Texas, No. 3 Yale, No. 4 Princeton and No. 6 Washington. Stanford took the lead in each of its races from the start, leading at each 500 meter buoy mark (500, 1000, 1500m) and never looking back.

Stanford's varsity eight set the tone for the day with a dominant open water finish in heat three, crossing the finish line at 6:11.674. The Cardinal's second varsity eight boat followed in a similar fashion, topping Princeton, Brown, Syracuse, Rhode Island, and Jacksonville with a time of 6:14.782. Stanford's varsity four ended the morning on a high note, besting Michigan by five seconds, avenging its loss on the same course where the Cardinal fell to the Wolverines at the Big Ten Invite April 15-16.

With today's results, Stanford will race in the AB semifinals for its varsity eight, second varsity eight, and varsity four boats Saturday morning. Within each semifinal, the top three finishers will compete in Sunday's grand final, while the final three finishers will race in Sunday's petite final- with each finish Sunday earning points towards the team's championship total. The program with the highest score after Sunday's finals races will be crowned NCAA Champions.

The Cardinal kicks off racing at 5:36 or 5:48 am PT Saturday, streamed live on NCAA.com. Official heat selections and starting times will be released on Stanford Women's Rowing's twitter account when available.
