STANFORD, Calif. - Recognized for their excellence in the classroom, in addition to on their respective playing surfaces, four Stanford men's student-athletes have been named CoSIDA Academic All-Americans in the at-large category. Axel Geller (men's tennis) was named to the first team, Shane Griffith (wrestling) and Curran Phillips (men's gymnastics) were chosen to the second team, and Leon MacAlister (men's swimming and diving) earned a nod to the third team.
Geller earns his second-career Academic All-America honor, and his first selection to the first team after tallying a third team honor in 2021. The Pac-12 Scholar-Athlete of the Year, Geller posted a 12-6 record in singles and a 12-8 mark in doubles this season, earning his fourth All-Pac-12 honor in the process. Earning his Master's in management science and engineering after finishing his undergraduate degree in economics, Geller helped the Cardinal to a 19-6 overall record and a berth in the NCAA Super Regionals.
Just the second two-time NCAA finalist in program history, Griffith is 59-6 in his Cardinal career. A two-time Pac-12 Wrestler of the Year and the 2021 NCAA champion at 165 pounds, he carries a 3.61 GPA in science, technology and society and has already begun working on his master's in communication. He is now the third Stanford wrestler to earn multiple CoSIDA Academic All-America honors.
Phillips was named 2022 CGA Specialist of the Year on parallel bars and captured the individual NCAA title in the event while guiding Stanford to a third consecutive national championship. A U.S. Senior National Team member, Phillips was the 2022 Winter Cup champion on parallel bars while finishing second on horizontal bar. The five-time NCAA All-American, including a parallel bars and vault selection this year, finished first in the nation on parallel bars and second on vault. A three-time CGA All-America Scholar-Athlete, Phillips graduated with a degree in human biology this spring while carrying a 3.62 GPA.
An economics major, MacAlister earns his first CoSIDA Academic All-America distinction. The Sydney, Australia native's 3.915 was one of six Stanford men's swimming and diving GPAs above the 3.90 mark, which helped the Cardinal earn the CSCAA Scholar All-America Team distinction. In the pool, MacAlister has solidified himself as one of the NCAA's best backstroke swimmers by earning five All-America honors at the 2022 NCAA Championship meet in the 100 back, 200 back, 400 medley relay, 200 medley relay, and 400 free relay. A two-time Pac-12 Champion and twice named to the Pac-12 Academic Honor Roll, MacAlister has already solidified his name among Stanford's top swimmers with five program record times.
With the four at-large selections on Tuesday, Stanford has now combined for 15 Academic All-America awards this season.
