LEADING OFF

  • ADAM CRAMPTON Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year ... All-Pac-12 defensive team ...   • DAVID ESQUER was named Pac-12 Coach of the Year for the second time while at Stanford (2018) and third overall (2001, California) ... earned ABCA West Region Coach of the Year ... won his 100th game at the helm of the program on March 4, 2021 as Stanford walked off with a 7-6 victory over San Francisco in 10 innings ... 700th career win came in a 5-4 triumph vs. Arizona on May 28 at Pac-12 Tournament ... has amassed a 182-72 overall record at Stanford and owns a 707-539-2 record as a Division I head coach (18 seasons at California) ... .717 win percentage at Stanford is the best in program history ... 300th career Pac-12 win came against USC on May 21 to claim sole possession of 2022 Pac-12 title ... made his ninth postseason appearance as a head coach (fourth with Stanford) ... previously guided California to Omaha in 2011 while earning National Coach of the Year honors.

  • QUINN MATHEWS ABCA All-Region second team ... All-Pac-12 honorable mention ... was a semifinalist for the 2022 John Olerud Two-Way Player of the Year ... hit safely in eight straight games from March 20-April 3 ... homered in all three games and batted .462 (6 for 13) with four runs scored, a double, three homers and nine RBIs in the series sweep of ASU ... made collegiate debut on Opening Day vs. Cal State Fullerton, striking out a pair to record his first career save in a 1-0 shutout victory ... debuted in the field on February 20 and went 3 for 5 with two home runs, six RBIs and three runs scored ... first freshman with a multi-homer game since Alex Blandino hit two vs. Arizona State on April 20, 2012 ... added a second multi-homer game vs. Grand Canyon on April 22 ... homered and collected the save in a 3-2 win vs. CSUN on March 6 ... 18 home runs ranked third on the team and were a Stanford freshman record.
  • EDDIE PARK was named Most Outstanding Player at Stanford Regional after batting .700 (14 for 20) with five runs scored, a double and two RBIs ... hit safely in all but 15 games with an at bat this year and reached in all but five ... finished the year on a 13-game hit streak (.520, 26x50, 11 R, 4 2B, 4 RBIs) ... first 41 career hits were singles, but his 42nd and 43rd were doubles ... now owns nine doubles and a triple as part of his 94 career hits ... batted .538 (21 for 39) with nine runs scored, three doubles and two RBIs during the postseason this year ... 21 hits were tied with Tommy Troy for the most of any player in the postseason.
  • TOMMY TROY hit .600 (12 for 20) with eight runs scored, four doubles, three homers and seven RBIs to earn All-Regional honors at the Stanford Regional ... solo home run tied the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the ninth of championship final vs. No. 13 Texas State in regional round ... batted .500 (21 for 42) with 12 runs scored, five doubles, five homers and nine RBIs during the postseason run ... 41 total bases during the NCAA tournament led all postseason participants, while his 21 hits were tied for most with Eddie Park ... was named to Karbach Round Rock Classic All-Tournament team (.455, 2 R, 2B, RBI).

A LOOK BACK

  • Stanford posted a 47-18 overall record and a 21-9 mark in the Pac-12 en route to an appearance in the 2022 College World Series – the 18th in program history and second in as many years.
  • The Cardinal also claimed the Pac-12 regular season title for the second time with David Esquer at the helm (2018) and won the inaugural Pac-12 tournament championship.
  • Putting together one of the best runs of baseball in program history, Stanford strung together a 17-game win streak from May 3 to June 3 - the longest unbeaten streak since beginning the 1998 season 16-0-1 and the longest win streak since winning a program-best 18 straight from April 16 - May 24, 1996.
  • The Cardinal finished the year having won 22 of the last 26, 25 of 31, 28 of 35, 33 of 41, and 38 of 48 overall.
  • Stanford set a program record with 118 home runs and finished second in the nation in shutouts (9).
  • For the second consecutive season, the Cardinal led all teams in postseason homers (23) ... Stanford also led the field in hits (128) and doubles (24).

REPRESENTING THE GOLDEN STATE & THE PAC-12

  • Stanford was the last Division I baseball team from California still competing in the NCAA Tournament at the start of super regionals
  • The Cardinal were joined by UC Santa Barbara (Stanford Regional), UCLA (Auburn Regional) and San Diego (Corvallis Regional) in the tournament field.
  • Stanford was also the last team from California competing a year ago - the only team from California to reach a super regional.
  • Oregon State hosted Auburn in a super regional, but was defeated in a winner-take-all game on Monday - leaving Stanford as the last Pac-12 school remaining.

OMAHA NOTES

  • Stanford went 0-2 in Omaha for the first time in program history ... had been the only school to make more than five CWS appearances without going 0-2 at least once.
  • Stanford is the third No. 2 overall seed to go 0-2 in Omaha, joining LSU (2003) and Cal State Fullerton (2009).
  • Stanford is 12-6 in its 18 'first games' at the College World Series ... had a streak of seven straight CWS-opening wins come to a halt last year with the loss to NC State ... Stanford's seven straight wins in CWS openers entering had been tied for the second-longest streak in CWS history, trailing Texas (8 straight from 1982-93) and Arizona State (7 straight from 1972-81)
  • David Esquer became the 13th coach to lead multiple schools to the CWS last year, having also guided Bay Area rival California to the 2011 CWS ... Jim Schlossnagle (TCU/Texas A&M) has since joined the list as the 14th.
  • Esquer is one of 17 men to play in the CWS as a student-athlete and later as a head coach (and the 12th to do so at his alma mater), and one of three men (joining Augie Garrido, Mike Gillespie) to coach multiple schools to the CWS in addition to playing in the CWS.
  • Esquer is also one of four men (joining North Carolina's Mike Fox, Stanford's Mark Marquess and St. John's Joe Russo) to earn All-Tournament Team honors at the CWS and later return as a head coach.
  • Stanford managed just four total runs in Omaha in 2022, but after scoring 14 runs on June 21, 2021 vs. Arizona, the Cardinal has scored 10 or more runs in at least one game at the CWS during seven of its last nine trips to Omaha.

ALL-AMERICA ACE & NATIONAL PITCHER OF THE YEAR SEMIFINALIST

  • Senior Alex Williams was named one of 25 semifinalists for the 2022 College Baseball Hall of Fame National Pitcher of the Year Award.
  • He was also named to Collegiate Baseball's All-America first team, Collegiate Baseball Foundation's first team, NCBWA's second team and ABCA's third team as a starting pitcher.
  • The 2022 Pac-12 Pitcher of the Year went 8-4 with a 3.20 ERA over 18 starts this season ... the ABCA All-Region first team selection logged 101 1/3 innings, striking out 96 compared to 25 walks.
  • The native of Castro Valley, Calif. went 5-0 in Pac-12 play, sporting a 1.36 ERA over 10 starts and 66 1/3 innings.
  • Particularly impressive over his last eight turns in the regular season, the right-hander went 6-0 with a 0.45 ERA (3 ER in 59 2/3 innings) over that string.
  • Williams, a two-time Pac-12 Pitcher of the Week selection, was one of two Pac-12 pitchers on the Pitcher of the Year list, joining Oregon State's Cooper Hjerpe - the 2022 National Pitcher of the Year.

GRAHAM EARNS ALL-AMERICA SELECTIONS

  • Following a breakout sophomore campaign, Carter Graham earned a spot on the Baseball America All-America second team, and third-team selections according to Collegiate Baseball and Perfect Game.
  • Graham, an All-Pac-12 and ABCA All-Region first team selection, led the Pac-12 in home runs with 22 and paced Stanford in RBIs (79).
  • Graham hit .331 with 64 runs scored, 13 doubles, a triple and the 22 home runs.
  • Graham strung together a 15-game hitting streak during the year, and hit safely in all but 12 of his 64 games played.
  • One of the most productive players for the Cardinal this season, Graham collected an RBI in 40 of 64 games and posted 24 multi-hit games and a team-best 22 multi-RBI contests.
  • Terrorizing Pac-12 pitching, Graham hit .365 with 34 runs scored, seven doubles, 11 homers and 42 RBIs in Pac-12 play.

JONES EARNS ALL-AMERICA HONORS FOR SECOND STRAIGHT YEAR

  • A 2021 All-American after hitting .311 with 18 homers and 62 RBIs a year ago, Brock Jones once again earned All-America honors as a junior this year.
  • The native of Fresno, Calif. landed on the D1Baseball All-America second team and earned third-team selections according to Baseball American and the ABCA.
  • An All-Pac-12 and ABCA All-Region first team honoree, Jones led Stanford in runs scored (78), triples (5) and on-base percentage (.451) while ranking second in home runs (21) and first in slugging (.664).
  • Jones batted .324 and drew 55 walks while reaching in all but two games this year and collecting 23 multi-hit games.
  • He hit .350 with 42 runs scored, seven doubles, three triples, 13 homers and 30 RBIs in Pac-12 play and finished the season having hit safely in eight straight contests.

MONTGOMERY A TOP TWO-WAY PLAYER & FRESHMAN ALL-AMERICAN

  • Freshman Braden Montgomery was a semifinalist for the 2022 John Olerud Two-Way Player of the Year, presented by the College Baseball Foundation.
  • The native of Madison, Miss. also earned Freshman All-America honors from Collegiate Baseball, Perfect Game and the NCBWA (second team).
  • Montgomery hit .294 with 50 runs scored, 16 doubles, two triples and 18 home runs while driving in 57.
  • His 18 home runs were a Stanford freshman record, besting the 12 from Paul Carey in 1987.
  • Stanford's starting right fielder also managed seven outfield assists.
  • On the mound, the native of Madison, Miss. compiled a pair of saves with 28 strikeouts over 18 2/3 innings of work.
  • Montgomery made 15 appearances, including three starts, pitching to a 5.79 ERA and limiting opponents to a .182 average against.
  • Montgomery was not selected as a finalist for the Olerud award when the list of five finalists was announced on May 31.
  • The award is named for the former Washington State University standout who achieved success both as a first baseman and left-handed pitcher during the late 1980s and was inducted into the National College Baseball Hall of Fame in 2007.
  • The 2022 recipient of the John Olerud Two-Way Player of the Year was Paul Skenes of Air Force.

REGION COACH OF THE YEAR

  • Having guided Stanford back to Omaha for the second consecutive season, Clarke and Elizabeth Nelson Director of Baseball David Esquer was named ABCA West Region Coach of the Year.
  • Esquer, the 2022 Pac-12 Coach of the Year, guided Stanford to a 47-18 overall record and a 21-9 mark in the Pac-12 en route to an appearance in the 2022 College World Series – the 18th in program history and second under his command.
  • The Cardinal also claimed the Pac-12 regular season title for the second time with Esquer at the helm (2018) and won the inaugural Pac-12 tournament championship.
  • Putting together one of the best runs of baseball in program history, Stanford strung together a 17-game win streak from May 3 to June 3 - the longest unbeaten streak since beginning the 1998 season 16-0-1 and the longest win streak since winning a program-best 18 straight from April 16 - May 24, 1996.
  • The Cardinal finished the year having won 22 of the last 26, 25 of 31, 28 of 35, 33 of 41, and 38 of 48 overall.
  • Esquer won his 700th career game during the 2022 campaign – reaching the milestone by way of a 5-4 triumph over Arizona on May 28 at the Pac-12 Tournament.
  • Through five seasons at Stanford, Esquer has compiled a 182-72 overall record to post a .717 winning percentage – the highest percentage of any coach in Stanford baseball history.
  • Having completed his 23rd season as a Division I head coach, Esquer carries a 707-539-2 career record.
  • The region coach of the year selection is the second for Esquer after winning the award in 2011 while at California ... he would ultimately be named National Coach of the Year according to NCBWA that same season.

JONES' GLOVE IS GOLD

  • Junior Brock Jones was tabbed an ABCA/Rawlings Gold Glove recipient as an outfielder, it was announced on June 22.
  • Jones was joined by Ryan Cermak (Illinois State) and Levi Usher (Louisville) as the outfielders on the list.
  • 2022 Pac-12 Defender of the Year Adam Crampton had been named a finalist for the Gold Glove at shortstop, but that was ultimately awarded to Kentucky's Ryan Ritter.
  • Jones patrolled center field for the Cardinal throughout the 2022 season, posting a .990 fielding percentage with three outfield assists.
  • Offensively, Jones batted .324 with 78 runs scored, 13 doubles, five triples, 21 homers and 57 RBIs to help guide Stanford to a second consecutive College World Series berth.

WILLIAMS, JONES TABBED ACADEMIC ALL-AMERICA

  • Senior Alex Williams and junior Brock Jones were named CoSIDA Academic All-Americans, the organization announced on June 8.
  • Williams earned a spot on the first team, while Jones landed on the second team for the second consecutive season.
  • Williams is just the third Cardinal baseball player to be named to the first team, joining Tom Williams (1972) and Brendan Beck (2021).
  • The 2022 Pac-12 Scholar-Athlete of the Year, Williams carried a 3.42 GPA as a management science and engineering major.
  • Jones, an All-Pac-12 first team selection, carried a 3.59 GPA as a science, technology and society major.

WILLIAMS GARNERS TOM HANSEN MEDAL

  • Alex Williams (baseball) and Brooke Forde (women's swimming and diving) were selected as Stanford's 2021-22 Pac-12 Tom Hansen Conference Medal recipients.
  • A Conference Medal is awarded annually to each member institution's outstanding senior male and female student-athlete based on the exhibition of the greatest combination of performance and achievement in scholarship, athletics and leadership.
  • Conference medal winners have been named every year since the 1960-61 academic year. In 2009, the Pac 12 renamed the award the Tom Hansen Conference Medal in honor of Hansen, who retired at the end of June 2009 after serving for 26 years as Commissioner of the Pac-10.

CARDINAL POWERS ITS WAY TO OMAHA

  • Stanford dropped the opening game of a super regional against Connecticut before rebounding to win the final two and take the series.
  • The Cardinal trailed 13-6 on Saturday in game one, but scored six times (highlighted by four homers) in the ninth to gain momentum for the next day.
  • Stanford hit eight homers in the game-one loss - the most for the Cardinal since launching eight against Washington State on May 2, 2004.
  • The Cardinal finished the three games batting .372 with 30 runs scored, six doubles, 12 homers and a .743 slugging percentage.
  • Brock Jones and Drew Bowser each hit three homers, with Jones batting .385 with four runs scored and six RBIs.
  • Tommy Troy and Braden Montgomery connected for two homers, with Troy batting .533 over the three games.

STANFORD REGIONAL WRAP

  • Stanford went 4-1 to win the Stanford Regional.
  • The Cardinal opened the regional with a 20-7 victory over Binghamton - the most runs scored by the Cardinal in postseason history (19 - 3x, last: vs. Richmond on June 1, 2003) ... included in the lopsided victory was a 10-run second inning - the first time Stanford has scored 10+ in a frame since scoring 10 in the fourth inning at Utah on May 5, 2018.
  • The win over the Bearcats ran Stanford's win streak to 17 games - one short of the program record set in 1996.
  • After dropping a 5-2 decision to No. 13 Texas State, Stanford won a pair of games on Sunday vs. No. 20 UCSB (8-4) and Texas State (8-4) to force a winner-take-all regional final on Monday.
  • Knotted 1-1 after eight innings Monday, Texas State scored two in the top of the ninth to take a 3-1 lead into the bottom of the inning.
  • Sophomore Drew Bowser led off the ninth with a solo homer before Tommy Troy connected for a solo-shot of his own to tie the game.
  • Eddie Park singled, moved to second on a sac bunt, and following an intentional walk to Brock Jones, scampered to third on a wild pitch.
  • Taking just his 13th career at bat, freshman Trevor Haskins delivered the walk-off single to plate Park, complete the comeback, and send Stanford to the super regional.
  • Park was named Most Outstanding Player of the regional after batting .700 (14 for 20) with five runs scored, a double and two RBIs.
  • Park was joined by Troy (.600, 12x20, 8 R, 4 2B, 3 HR, 7 RBIs), Kody Huff (.412, 7x17, 7 R, 2B, 3B, 3 RBIs), Adam Crampton (.313, 5x16, R, 3B, 4 RBIs), Carter Graham (.313, 5x16, 4 R, 2B, 2 HR, 7 RBIs), Bowser (.286, 6x21, 6 R, 2B, 3 HR, 8 RBIs) and Quinn Mathews (W, 6 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 3 BB, 3 K) on the All-Regional team.
  • The Cardinal as a team hit .376 in the regional, collecting 13 doubles, two triples, 10 homers and 40 RBIs.

CARDINAL CLEANS UP PAC-12 YEARLY AWARDS

  • Stanford captured four of the five major Pac-12 yearly awards - with David Esquer named Coach of the Year, Alex Williams winning Pitcher of the Year, Adam Crampton earning Defensive Player of the Year and Braden Montgomery taking home Freshman of the Year.
  • Eight Cardinal players earned All-Pac-12 honors, with Brett Barrera, Carter Graham, Kody Huff, Brock Jones and Williams earning a spot on the first team ... Quinn Mathews and Braden Montgomery earned honorable mention selections.
  • Crampton, Jones and Williams also found themselves on the Pac-12 All-Defensive team.
  • Stanford has now won consecutive Pac-12 Pitcher of the Year awards after Brendan Beck earned the honor in 2021 ... the Cardinal has claimed nine Pitcher of the Year selections in program history.
  • Montgomery is the fifth Pac-12 Freshman of the Year in program history, including the first since Cal Quantrill in 2014.
  • Crampton is the third Defensive Player of the Year, including the second under Esquer after Maverick Handley won the award in 2019.
  • 2022 marks the second Coach of the Year selection for Esquer while at Stanford (2018) ... it is the 11th time in program history (Mark Marquess - nine times) ... Esquer had previously captured Pac-10 Coach of the Year while at California in 2001.

WIN STREAKING

  • Stanford strung together a 17-game win streak from May 3 to June 3 - the longest unbeaten streak since beginning the 1998 season 16-0-1 and the longest win streak since winning a program-best 18 straight from April 16 - May 24, 1996.
  • Over the 17-game win streak, the Cardinal batted .348 while outscoring opponents 185-69.
  • Stanford collected 35 doubles, six triples and 50 home runs (allowed only four home runs).
  • Cardinal pitchers compiled a 3.76 ERA with 128 strikeouts in 153 innings while holding opponents to a .241 average against over the streak.
  • As part of the 17-game win streak, Stanford's pitching staff allowed a home run to UC Davis with one out in the fifth inning on May 3 ... the Cardinal did not allow another home run until two outs in the first inning of the final game of the regular season on May 21 – a span of 10 full games and 95 1/3 innings without allowing a home run.

HANGING ZEROES

  • Stanford posted nine shutouts - the second-most in the nation this year (Vanderbilt, 10) and fifth-most in Stanford history.
  • Five pitchers combined in the first two shutouts this year vs. Cal State Fullerton (Feb. 18) and Santa Clara (Feb. 22), with Ty Uber, Joey Dixon and Braden Montgomery contributing to both.
  • Drew Dowd and Dixon teamed to blank Indiana from the Round Rock Classic before Quinn Mathews, Tommy O'Rourke and Montgomery shut out No. 2 Arkansas that same day.
  • Stanford allowed just two runs over 46 innings pitched from the eighth inning vs. Cal State Fullerton on Feb. 19 through the first inning of a game at UTSA on Feb 28.
  • An unearned run allowed at UTSA in the second inning on Feb. 28 ended a string of 25 consecutive scoreless innings pitched.
  • Stanford's fifth shutout came in a 1-0 victory in 10 innings at No. 3 Oregon State as Williams, O'Rourke, Dixon and Mathews combined to blank the Beavers to open a three-game series.
  • Williams contributed a three-hit shutout with six strikeouts vs. Arizona State on April 8 for the sixth shutout.
  • Stanford's seventh shutout came at No. 12 UCLA on April 16 as Mathews (7 IP) and Brandt Pancer (2 IP) combined for an 11-0 win.
  • The eighth shutout came on May 13 at Utah as three pitchers, including Williams (8 IP) and Mathews (IP), combined for a 5-0 win.
  • Stanford's final shutout came in a 19-0 victory at Santa Clara on May 17 as six pitchers combined to blank the Broncos.
  • Stanford starters went 26-6 with a 3.94 ERA while pitching 278 2/3 innings.
  • The Cardinal pitched to a 4.23 ERA (third in Pac-12 & 26th nationally) and recorded a 1.38 WHIP ... Stanford also managed 9.22 strikeouts per nine innings while striking out 595 - second-most in Stanford history.
  • Stanford featured two of the top five pitchers in the Pac-12 in terms of ERA (Mathews - 2nd, 3.08; Williams - 3rd, 3.20)
  • Mathews (three selections) and Williams (two selections) combined for five Pac-12 honors in the 12 weeks this season ... the last school to win the award five-plus times in a season was UCLA with six in 2019.

LONG BALLS LEADING THE WAY

  • Stanford hit a program-record 118 home runs compared to 36 allowed this year (+82 in home run differential) ... the 118 home runs topped the previous Stanford record of 102 from 1997 ... Carter Graham led the way with a Pac-12-best 22, followed by Brock Jones with 21 (second in Pac-12), Braden Montgomery and Drew Bowser with 18 (third in Pac-12), Kody Huff with 13 (ninth in Pac-12) and Brett Barrera with 11 ... Montgomery, Graham, Jones, Huff, Bowser, Tommy Troy and Vincent Martinez have each posted multi-homer games, including four from Jones, three from Graham, and two from Montgomery and Bowser.
  • The Cardinal hit 23 homers in the postseason this year - the most of any team in the field.
  • Stanford's lineup featured six different players with double-digit homers, while 11 different Cardinal hit at least one.
  • The Cardinal homered in just two of its first six games, but connected for at least one in 11 of its next 14 - including three three times.
  • While Stanford did not hit a homer in the four games preceding a three-game series against Arizona State, the Cardinal hit nine homers in the series against the Sun Devils - including four homers in the Sunday finale.
  • Stanford's season high in homers came on June 11 vs. Connecticut when it hit eight - the most for the Cardinal since launching eight against Washington State on May 2, 2004 ... Stanford has also managed a six-homer game this year - accomplishing the feat on May 20 against USC ... the six round-trippers, hit by six different players, were the most for the Cardinal since hitting seven at Arizona on May 16, 2004 ... the Cardinal has connected for five home runs three times in a game this year (vs. UC Davis, May 3; at Santa Clara, May 17; vs. Arizona, May 26).
  • The Cardinal finished first in the Pac-12 in home runs with 118 (eighth nationally) and averaged a conference-best 1.82 per game (14th nationally).
  • Stanford managed multiple homers in 21 of its last 27 games overall - collecting 71 round-trippers over those 27 contests.
  • Stanford went 38-10 when hitting at least one home run in a game and 29-7 when hitting two or more this season.
  • Stanford hit just two home runs over 16 games played in 2020, but connected for seven in the first three games last season – including four on Opening Day vs. Santa Clara.
  • Held homerless just 14 times in 2021, the Cardinal launched 85 through 56 games to rank first in the conference and 13th in the nation.
  • The Cardinal also hit 22 home runs in the 2021 postseason - the most of any team in the field.
  • Stanford was 34-8 when hitting at least one home run in a game and 22-4 when hitting two or more in 2021.

VYING FOR SPOTS WITH TEAM USA

  • Ryan Bruno and Braden Montgomery were named to the 50-man 2022 Collegiate National Team Training Camp roster that will compete in a five-game intrasquad series in North Carolina from June 30–July 4.
  • The roster is made up of the best non-draft eligible college baseball players in the country.
  • Players will arrive in Cary for Training Camp on June 28, and then compete in a five-game Stars vs. Stripes intrasquad series in North Carolina before the staff will name a final 26-man national team roster on July 5.
  • Led by Manager Mike Bianco (Ole Miss), who led Ole Miss to its first College World Series title this season, Team USA will then travel to Haarlem, Netherlands, to compete in Honkbalweek Haarlem.
  • Thirty-one different schools are represented on the 2022 Collegiate National Team roster, with Stanford being one of 13 boasting multiple athletes.

  • Drew Bowser: 28 GP, .243, 25x103, 17 R, 4 2B, 4 HR, 11 RBIs / 34 GP, .331, 45x136, 33 R, 7 2B, 3B, 14 HR, 39 RBIs
  • Stanford went 19-11 over its first 30 games and went 28-7 over the last 35.
  • Three of Stanford's nine regular starters were hitting .300 or better at the 30-game mark while eight of nine hit .300 or better over the last 35 games.

RBIS COMING IN BUNCHES

  • Stanford featured eight different players with at least five RBIs in a game this season, and four of the eight did it twice.
  • Brock Jones posted the high-water mark - posting seven RBIs as part of a 3 for 4 day that included a pair of homers vs. UC Davis on May 3 ... he added a five-RBI game vs. Connecticut on June 11 after launching a trio of homers in the contest.
  • Vincent Martinez had six RBIs against Arizona State on April 10, connecting for two home runs, including a tie-breaking grand slam, to finish 2 for 4.
  • Freshman Braden Montgomery went 3 for 5 with two home runs, six RBIs and three runs scored on February 20 vs. Cal State Fullerton.
  • Brett Barrera managed five at Santa Clara on May 17 and five more vs. USC on May 20 - the latter performance highlighted by a grand slam.
  • Drew Bowser twice used a grand slam to help post five RBIs in a game - at Santa Clara on May 17 and vs. Binghamton on June 3.
  • Tommy Troy also had five vs. Binghamton on June 3 as he finished 4 for 5 with a pair of homers.
  • Carter Graham had five RBIs vs. Oregon on March 12 before launching two homers to eventually finish with five driven in vs. Texas State on June 5.
  • Kody Huff used a grand slam to help drive in five as part of a 3 for 4 day vs. Connecticut on June 13.

PAC-12 DANCING

  • Five Pac-12 programs were selected to the 2022 NCAA Baseball Championship, including Conference champion Stanford and runner-up Oregon State among the top-16 national seeds to host regional play ... Oregon, Arizona and UCLA were also selected to the tournament field.
  • The Cardinal (No. 2) and Beavers (No. 3) were national seeds and each advanced to the super regional round ... Stanford was the last Pac-12 team competing.
  • Oregon State welcomed New Mexico State, San Diego and Vanderbilt to the Corvallis Regional ... Oregon State dropped a super regional to Auburn in three.
  • The Ducks headed to Louisville to take on Michigan, No. 12 seed Louisville and Southeast Missouri St.
  • The Wildcats played in the Coral Gables Regional, clashing with Ole Miss, No. 6 Miami and Canisius.
  • The Bruins opened tournament play against Florida State in the Auburn Regional that also featured No. 14 Auburn and Southeastern Louisiana.
  • Pac-12 programs have combined to win 29 of the 75 NCAA baseball championships all-time, 14 more than the next closest conference ... the league also boasts nine Golden Spikes Award winners, tied for the most all-time, and paces its peers with eight No. 1 overall MLB Draft picks, including in four of the past 11 drafts and two of the past three (note prior to 2022 draft)
  • The Conference has had a representative in all but seven NCAA College World Series fields since the championship began in 1947 ... a Pac-12 team has finished either first or second in 39 of those championships.
  • Pac-12 programs account for six of the 15 schools that have captured multiple college baseball national championships - double the number of schools of any other conference.

CARDINAL WINS INAUGURAL PAC-12 TOURNAMENT

  • Stanford went 4-0 to win the inaugural Pac-12 Baseball Tournament in Scottsdale, Ariz.
  • The Cardinal opened the tournament with a 6-3 victory over Arizona State before defeating Arizona 15-8 and 5-4 in the next two contests to earn a spot in the Pac-12 Tournament championship game.
  • Facing No. 4 Oregon State (the second seed in the tournament), Stanford defeated the Beavers 9-5 to win the title.
  • Stanford hit .354 with 35 runs scored, eight doubles, two triples and 11 homers during the four games in Scottsdale.
  • Sophomore Drew Bowser batted .444 with six runs scored, two doubles, four homers and eight RBIs to earn All-Tournament honors at third base.
  • Junior Adam Crampton also earned a spot on the All-Tournament team at shortstop after batting .467 with two runs scored and three RBIs.
  • Sophomore Brandt Pancer made two appearances in relief for the Cardinal, going 1-0 with a save while allowing two runs and striking out five over five innings of work ... he was credited with the save in the championship game vs. Oregon State.

SCHOLAR-ATHLETE OF THE YEAR

  • Alex Williams was named 2022 Pac-12 Baseball Scholar-Athlete of the Year, the Conference office announced at the 2022 Pac-12 Baseball Tournament.
  • The award, which is presented in each of the 24 sports the Pac-12 sponsors, was established to honor collegiate student-athletes that are standouts both academically and in their sports discipline.
  • Williams is the fourth Stanford baseball player to garner the award, including the second consecutive after Zach Grech earned the honor a year ago ... Andrew Triggs (2012) and Mark Appel (2013) had previously won the award.
  • The native of Castro Valley, Calif. was named the 2022 Pac-12 Pitcher of the Year and earned a spot on the All-Pac-12 first team.
  • Williams went 5-0 in Pac-12 play, sporting a 1.36 ERA over 10 starts and 66 1/3 innings.
  • Particularly impressive over his last eight turns in the regular season, the right-hander went 6-0 with a 0.45 ERA over that string.
  • A finalist for the Senior Class Award, Williams was a CoSIDA Academic All-American and carried a 3.43 GPA as a management science & engineering major.
  • In his first two seasons at Stanford, Williams volunteered with the Miracle League and participated in visits to children's hospitals ... he has also worked at baseball camps, where he helps develop the youth in the area ... while at home, Williams has volunteered at his local church leading a youth bible study for children ages 4-12.

ON TOP EARLY

  • Stanford outscored opponents 123-71 in the first two innings this year - 57-33 in the first and 66-38 in the second.
  • Stanford was 26-9 when scoring first this year.
  • Stanford outscored its postseason opponents 24-6 in the first two innings during 2021 – 16-3 in the regional round, 7-0 in the Lubbock Super Regional and 1-3 in the College World Series.
  • This year, Stanford outscored its postseason opponents 31-19 in the first two innings.

JONES TABBED DICK HOWSER TROPHY NATIONAL PLAYER OF THE MONTH

  • Junior Brock Jones earned NCBWA Dick Howser Trophy National Player of the Month for May after helping guide Stanford to a 16-1 mark.
  • Jones slugged 11 homers and drove in 27 runs during the 17-game month for Stanford.
  • He hit .412 (28 for 68) with 32 runs scored, two doubles and one triple while hitting safely in all but two games (nine multi-hit games)
  • Jones had a 15-12 walk-strikeout ratio, sporting a .956 slugging and a .529 on-base percentage, stealing 7-of-8 bases.
  • The native of Fresno, Calif. had a string of six consecutive games with a home run - stretching May 15-25.

TOP OF THE SENIOR CLASS

  • Senior Alex Williams was one of 10 baseball student-athletes selected as a finalist for the 2022 Senior CLASS Award® - an award eventually bestowed on Navy's Christian Policelli.
  • Following a nation-wide vote, Williams was ultimately named to the Senior CLASS Award All-America first team.
  • To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior or graduate student and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence: community, classroom, character and competition. The complete list of candidates follows this release.
  • An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School®, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.

ERRORS CAN BE COSTLY

  • Stanford committed just two errors over the first seven games of the year, going 6-1 over that string.
  • The Cardinal made 24 errors over the next 13 games, going 6-7 over the span.
  • Errors came in bunches for the Cardinal this year, as it committed four-plus in a game three different times.
  • Stanford played perfect defense in 30 games, committed one error 24 times, two errors five times, three errors three times, four errors twice and five errors once.
  • Stanford went 42-12 when making one or fewer errors this year, but 5-6 when making more than one.

SOPHOMORE ARMS OUT OF THE BULLPEN

  • Stanford relievers combined for 302 1/3 innings out of the bullpen - 163 (54%) coming from sophomore arms.
  • Ryan Bruno and Tommy O'Rourke were the most used arms out of the bullpen, with Bruno making 30 appearances and O'Rourke 28.
  • Bruno struck out 71 over 39 2/3 innings to average 16.11 strikeouts per nine innings pitched.
  • In his career, O'Rourke has appeared in 55 games, including two spot starts, and has pitched 57 innings while amassing a 4.26 ERA with 60 strikeouts ... the right-hander has inherited 52 runners in his career, allowing 20 to score.
  • Joey Dixon allowed six earned runs and sported a 1-1 record and two saves to accompany a 1.84 ERA over his 19 relief appearances in 2021, spanning a string of 29 1/3 innings ... over his career, Dixon has made 39 relief appearances, compiling a 3-4 record with three saves and a 2.94 ERA (22 ER in 67 1/3 IP) out of the bullpen.

KARBACH ROUND ROCK CLASSIC CHAMPIONS

  • Stanford captured the 2022 Karbach Round Rock Classic tournament championship by going 3-0 at Dell Diamond.
  • The Cardinal defeated Louisiana 5-1 in the opener before shutting out Indiana 13-0 and No. 2 Arkansas 5-0 to take the title.
  • Following conclusion of play, designated hitter Brett Barrera was named Tournament MVP.
  • Joining Barrera on the All-Tournament team were infielders Adam Crampton and Tommy Troy, starting pitcher Quinn Mathews, and catcher Kody Huff.
  • Barrera hit .636 (7 for 11) with two runs scored, a double, two homers and eight RBI over the three games.
  • Huff went 5 for 10 (.500) with four runs scored, a double, a homer and two RBIs.
  • Troy was 5 for 11 (.455) with two runs scored, a double and one RBI.
  • Crampton hit .364 (4 for 11) with a run scored, two doubles and three RBIs.
  • Mathews managed a career-high 10 strikeouts with two hits allowed over six shutout innings to earn victory vs. Arkansas.
  • The Cardinal outscored the field 23-1 in Round Rock and the pitchers posted a 0.36 ERA while allowing 13 hits and striking out 34 ... Stanford hit .365 while holding opponents to a .155 average against.

PAC-12 & NATIONAL PLAYER OF THE WEEK

  • Junior Brock Jones homered in all four games over the week ending May 22, and posted multiple hits in every contest, to earn Pac-12 Player of the Week and a National Player of the Week nod by Collegiate Baseball on May 23.
  • The native of Fresno, Calif. finished the four-game week batting .625 (10 for 16) with 11 runs scored, four homers and 10 RBIs ... he reached at a .700 clip and slugged 1.375.
  • Included in the week was a .667 average (8 for 12) with eight runs scored, three homers and eight RBIs against USC.
  • The national honor was the second of Jones' career (March 8, 2021), while the conference honor was the first of his career.

WILLIAMS DOMINANT AGAINST CAL TO EARN PAC-12 WEEKLY HONOR

  • Senior Alex Williams allowed two unearned runs on four hits with seven strikeouts over 8 1/3 innings to guide Stanford to victory over Cal on May 6, earning Pac-12 Pitcher of the Week honors at the conclusion of the weekend.
  • The selection is the second of William's season after also earning the honor on April 11.
  • The right-hander threw 123 pitches and faced one over the minimum from the second through the eighth – allowing a two-out single in the third and getting a double play ball to erase a leadoff single in the sixth.
  • Williams surrendered a run in the first, and left the game with runners at the corners and one out in the ninth after an error allowed the leadoff man to reach in the final frame.

THIRD PAC-12 WEEKLY HONOR FOR MATHEWS

  • Junior Quinn Mathews earned his third Pac-12 Pitcher of the Week honor on April 18 following the UCLA series.
  • Mathews tossed seven shutout innings, allowing four hits and three walks while striking out eight, to guide Stanford to its seventh shutout of the year on April 16.
  • He is the first pitcher to be honored three times in the same season since UCLA's Ryan Garcia in 2019
  • Mathews is also the first Stanford pitcher to capture this award three times in the same season since Mark Appel in 2013

MARTINEZ LAUDED FOR IMPRESSIVE WEEKEND VS. ARIZONA STATE

  • Senior Vincent Martinez homered in all three games of a series against Arizona State, including connecting for a pair in Sunday's finale, earning a spot on Collegiate Baseball's National Players of the Week on April 11.
  • Martinez finished the weekend 5 for 11 (.455) with four runs scored, four homers and nine RBIs ... he connected for two home runs, including a tie-breaking grand slam in the fourth inning, as Stanford scored a season-best 16 runs on a season-high 22 hits to earn a series sweep on Sunday ... the native of San Marcos, Calif. finished Sunday 2 for 4 with two runs scored, a walk and six RBIs – his final two coming on a two-run home run in the bottom of the seventh ... the six RBIs are the most in a game for Martinez in his career, while Sunday served as his first multi-homer game and ran his season home run total to five.
  • Over four games that week, Martinez posted a .417 average, 1.417 slugging percentage, four runs scored, four homers and nine RBIs ... contributing crucial long balls all weekend, his solo home run on Friday proved to be the game winner, while his solo homer on Saturday tied the game at two in the fifth.
  • Martinez' selection was the second from Collegiate Baseball for Stanford this year, as Quinn Mathews was lauded on April 4.

WILLIAMS' THREE-HIT SHUTOUT EARNS PAC-12 WEEKLY HONOR

  • Alex Williams was named Pac-12 Pitcher of the Week on April 11 after tossing a three-hit shutout vs. Arizona State on April 8.
  • The complete game, the first in the Pac-12 this season, was the third of Williams' career - including the first since tossing a shutout at No. 8 Texas Tech to send Stanford to the 2021 College World Series.
  • Williams needed 101 pitches to navigate the nine innings, working around singles in the fifth, sixth and eighth, and a walk in the fourth for ASU's only baserunners ... the right-hander struck out six batters in the win.
  • Williams faced one over the minimum in the final four innings, using a double play ball in the eighth to erase a leadoff single.
  • The selection is the second of Williams' career, having previously earned a selection on February 18, 2020.

NATIONAL RECOGNITION FOR MATHEWS

  • Junior Quinn Mathews collected a National Pitcher of the Week selection from Collegiate Baseball on April 4.
  • Mathews posted a win and a save in a three-game series win at then-No. 3 Oregon State from April 1-3.
  • Mathews, who was originally slated to start Saturday's game two, closed out a 1-0 shutout on Friday by working a 1-2-3 10th inning with two strikeouts ... the save was the first of Mathews' career.
  • Mathews did not pitch on Saturday, but returned on Sunday to strike out a career-high tying 11 batters over seven relief innings ... the native of Aliso Viejo, Calif. entered the game with the bases loaded and nobody out in the third inning before taking the Cardinal the rest of the way ... Mathews, who threw 120 pitches, struck out two in a 1-2-3 eighth inning before striking out the side in order in the ninth to collect the victory and move to 4-1 on the season ... all told, Mathews faced one over the minimum with eight strikeouts over his final four innings of work.
  • Over two appearances in the series, Mathews allowed one run over eight innings with 13 strikeouts.
  • The Collegiate Baseball Player of the Week selection is the first of Mathews' career.

HUFF UP FOR THE BUSTER POSEY AWARD

  • Junior Kody Huff was one of 77 catchers listed on the initial Buster Posey National Collegiate Catcher of the Year Award watch list.
  • Huff was not included in the updated semifinalist list released on May 19.
  • The three finalists are Michael Carico (Davidson), Zach Morgan (Fresno State) and Kevin Parada (Georgia Tech), and a final vote among the national committee will occur during the College World Series.
  • All finalists will be brought to Wichita and the winner will be announced on June 29.
  • Joining Huff from the Pac-12 on the initial list were Cole Elvis (Cal), Garret Guillemette (USC) and Daniel Susac (Arizona).

MATHEWS HONORED AGAIN

  • Junior Quinn Mathews was named Pac-12 Pitcher of the Week for the second time this year on March 28 (also March 1)
  • Mathews managed a career-high 11 strikeouts over seven shutout innings in a victory over Washington State on March 26.
  • The lefty struck out six through three innings and eight through four en route to surpassing his previous high of 10 against No. 2 Arkansas on February 27 of this season.
  • Mathews is the first Stanford pitcher to win the award multiple times in the same season since Brendan Beck did it twice in 2021.

SWEEP OF THE PAC-12 WEEKLY AWARDS, MATHEWS NAMED NATIONAL PITCHER OF THE WEEK

  • Stanford swept the Pac-12 weekly awards as announced on February 28, with Brett Barrera earning Pac-12 Player of the Week and Quinn Mathews winning Pac-12 Pitcher of the Week.
  • Barrera batted 7 for 11 with two home runs and eight RBIs at the Round Rock Classic, capping a week in which he hit safely in all four games played - including posting multiple hits in the final three.
  • With the selection, Barrera became the first Stanford player to win Pac-12 Player of the Week since Andrew Daschbach in May 2019.
  • Mathews managed a career-high 10 strikeouts with two hits allowed over six shutout innings to earn the victory vs. No. 2 Arkansas.
  • The selections marked the first time Stanford has won both awards in the same week since March 6, 2017 when Hunter Simmons won Player of the Week and Colton Hock won Pitcher of the Week.
  • In addition to Pac-12 Pitcher of the Week, Mathews was also named National Pitcher of the Week by the College Baseball Foundation.

BROCK JONES IS ONE TO WATCH

  • Junior Brock Jones was listed on the watch list for USA Baseball's Golden Spikes Award and the Bobby Bragan Collegiate Slugger Award.
  • Jones was not listed on the list of semifinalists for the Golden Spikes Award released on May 24.
  • Jones was one of 55 players on the preseason Golden Spikes Award watch list, beginning the process of identifying the top amateur baseball player in the country for the 2022 season.
  • Sixteen different collegiate athletic conferences were represented on the 2022 preseason watch list with six of those conferences boasting multiple selections, including the Atlantic Coast, Big 12, Big West, Colonial Athletic Association, Pac-12, and Southeastern Conferences.
  • There were a total of seven players on the list from the Pac-12, with California (Dylan Beavers & Josh White) and Arizona State (Ethan Long & Sean McLain) each boasting two ... Jones is also joined by Max Rajcic (UCLA) and Daniel Susac (Arizona).
  • The three finalists for the Golden Spikes Award are Hjerpe (Oregon State), Ivan Melendez (Texas) and Kevin Parada (Georgia Tech).
  • The Bobby Bragan Collegiate Slugger Award (BBCSA) watch list consisted of 44 players representing 18 conferences.
  • The 2022 winner of the BBCSA and Golden Spikes Award was Ivan Melendez (Texas).
  • The BBCSA started out in 2017 as an honor going to the top college hitter in Texas ... in 2019, the award expanded as a regional award covering Division I programs in Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana, New Mexico and Oklahoma ... the BBCSA became a national award in 2020; however, no winner was announced due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
  • Six players from the Pac-12 were on the watch list for the BBCSA, including Jones, Dylan Beavers (California), Cole Elvis (California), Josh Kasevich (Oregon), Tanner Smith (Oregon) and Daniel Susac (Arizona).

  • Junior Brock Jones was a consensus preseason All-America selection, earning a spot on the first team according to Collegiate Baseball, Perfect Game, D1Baseball and the NCBWA, and a second-team selection from Baseball America.
  • Jones, who competed last summer with USA Baseball's Collegiate National Team, was a second-team All-American according to Baseball America, Perfect Game and D1Baseball a year ago.
  • Reached safely in all but five games last year while hitting .311 with 18 home runs to rank first in the Pac-12 and 16th nationally.
  • Compiled a team-high 62 RBIs, 56 runs scored and a .453 on-base percentage while amassing 32 extra-base hits, including 13 doubles and a triple, while finishing with a .646 slugging percentage to rank third in the Pac-12.
  • Recorded 16 multi-hit and 13 multi-RBI games last season and finished with 23 runs scored, three doubles, six homers and 22 RBIs in Pac-12 play.
  • Showing patience at the plate, Jones walked a team-best 49 times to rank third in the Pac-12 and 11th nationally.
  • Jones was one of two Pac-12 players with 10-plus home runs (18) and 10-plus stolen bases (14) in 2021.
  • In postseason play last year, Jones hit .361 with 13 runs scored, five doubles, five home runs and 18 RBIs - the most RBIs of any player in the tournament ... became just the third player since BBCOR bats were adopted in 2011 to have 18 or more postseason RBIs (20 - Adley Rutschman, Oregon State, 2018; Preston Tucker, Florida, 2011) ... upon reaching the College World Series, he managed a pair of three-hit games, batting .429 overall with three runs scored, two doubles, two homers and eight RBIs in Omaha to earn a spot on the College World Series All-Tournament team.
  • Hit three homers, including a grand slam, against Texas Tech on June 12, 2021 to total six RBIs and help Stanford to the College World Series.

BASEBALL COACHING ENDOWMENT CELEBRATES KATHY WOLFF

  • With a gift from an anonymous donor family, a newly endowed assistant coach position will pay tribute to Kathy Wolff - a longtime administrative associate for more than two decades to Stanford's baseball and women's volleyball programs.
  • Thomas Eager will be the inaugural Kathy Wolff Assistant Baseball Coach.
  • Often considered the "heart and soul" of the baseball program, Wolff was hired as an administrative assistant in the marketing department in 1985 ... the native of Palo Alto began working with the baseball program in 1987, later adding administrative duties with the women's volleyball program.
  • Wolff, who saw the Cardinal win two national championships during her first two seasons with the program, helped coordinate 11 trips to the College World Series in Omaha ... the beloved member of the Stanford Baseball family was busy coordinating another College World Series trip when she passed away on June 11, 2008 ... the Cardinal honored Wolff that year by wearing "KW" patches on its sleeves throughout the College World Series run.
  • In addition to helping the program recruit and retain the best coaching staff, the endowed assistant coaching position recognizes the influence that Wolff still has on the athletics department today ... Stanford's Department of Athletics, Physical Education and Recreation (DAPER) annually recognizes a staff member with the Kathy Wolff Award for best exemplifying her spirit—a passion for Stanford and an ongoing desire to help and support his/her colleagues ... in the week leading up to baseball season every year, the athletics department celebrates Cake Week—a time when staff members are encouraged to continue Wolff's tradition of bringing in baked goods to enjoy together.

MARQUESS NAMED TO COLLEGE BASEBALL HALL OF FAME

  • Legendary Stanford head coach Mark Marquess, who spent 41 years with the Cardinal and retired in 2017 as the eighth-winningest coach in NCAA history, was named a member of the National College Baseball Hall of Fame Class of 2021.
  • The latest class was inducted as part of the virtual College Baseball Night of Champions ceremony on June 26.
  • Headlining the class alongside Marquess were 1995 National Player of the Year Todd Helton from Tennessee and Auburn pitcher Gregg Olson.
  • When he retired from coaching following the 2017 season, Marquess had compiled a record of 1,627-878-7 for a .649 winning percentage.
  • Marquess led Stanford to the College World Series 14 times with back-to-back titles in 1987 and 1988.
  • Of his 41 seasons as a coach, 30 of his teams reached the postseason and he sent more than 200 players into professional baseball.
  • A member of the ABCA Hall of Fame, Marquess was a three-time NCAA Coach of the Year recipient and nine-time Pac-10 Coach of the Year pick.
  • Marquess finished with a career 133-66 record in postseason play, including an 84-29 mark in the NCAA Regionals, a 13-10 ledger in the NCAA Super Regionals and a 36-25 (.590) record at the 14 College World Series.
  • A three-year starter at first base for Stanford (1967-69), he earned first-team All-America honors in 1967 and garnered second-team All-America recognition in 1968.
  • Having played in the 1967 College World Series before embarking on his coaching career, Marquess is one of 17 people to play in the College World Series and later lead a team to Omaha as a head coach ... is one of 12 to play in and then lead his alma mater to Omaha.

NO PLACE LIKE HOME

  • Often considered one of the most beautiful college baseball facilities in the country, Klein Field at Sunken Diamond is the home to Stanford baseball.
  • The "Sunken Diamond" name comes from the excavation to provide fill for the earthen berm within which Stanford Stadium was built in 1921, leaving a large, sunken field.
  • The fixed seating capacity of Klein Field at Sunken Diamond is 2,113 ... with the addition of disabled seating and general admission lawn seating, the total capacity of the facility is 4,000.
  • The original dimensions were 360 feet to left field, 350 to right, and 500 feet to center ... in 1978, a new seven-foot high fence was installed, bringing the dimensions to the current 335 to both left and right field, and 400 to center ... the outfield fence was increased to 10 feet in 1995.
