Cardinal Surges Past Spartans

STANFORD, Calif. - Almost a week removed from the busy and momentous MPSF Invite, No. 1 Stanford returned to action with a sluggish start, but did enough to surge late past the visiting and No. 14 ranked San Jose Spartans on Saturday, 14-7. The game was tied 6-6 before the Cardinal scored eight of the last nine goals of the game.

The win pushes Stanford to 14-0 on the season, its best start since a 17-0 start in 2001.

The game started slowly on both ends, with missed shots and turnovers the most common result for each team's offense. The Spartans struck first before Stanford took advantage of two man-up opportunities for a 2-1 lead after the first period.

Beck Jurasius gave Stanford a brief two-goal advantage, but it was short lived as SJSU notched a powerplay goal of its own followed by another strike from Bende Pardi to tie things at 3-3, which would remain the score until halftime as Stanford's offense failed to find a rhythm.

The two sides traded goals from 3-3 all the way to 6-6 before the Cardinal put its foot on the gas. Jackson Painter scored the final goal of the third and the Cardinal continued the momentum, rattling off five straight to put away the SJSU threat. Painter and Quinn Woodhead tied for the team-lead with three assists each.
