BOONE, N.C. - Jason Miranda, Daniel Cardenas and Shane Griffith won titles to lead No. 20 Stanford at the Mountaineer Invitational on Saturday.
Overall, 12 out of 15 Cardinal placed at the tournament. Miranda went 3-0 to claim the 141-pound crown, including an 11-1 major decision over Heath Gonyer of Appalachian State in the finals.
Cardenas, a true freshman from Arvada, Colorado, won his second straight tournament at 157 pounds. He upset No. 12 Jake Keating of Virginia, 12-6, in the semifinals before defeating teammate Charlie Darracott in the finals. Cardenas is now 9-0 on the season.
Griiffith also won his second consecutive tournament, moving to 7-0 at 165 pounds. The Westwood, New Jersey native defeated ninth-ranked Justin McCoy of Virginia, 6-1, in the finals.
Darracott reached the finals at 157 pounds by knocking off No. 23 Cody Bond of Appalachian State, 3-1, in the semis. The junior is now 6-2 on the year. Also turning in runner-up finishes for the Cardinal were No. 25 Tyler Eischens (174), Nick Stemmet (197) and Seamus O'Malley (285).
True freshmen Nico Provo and Brook Byers placed third at 125 and 184 pounds, respectively. Finishing fifth for the Cardinal were 133-pounder Jackson DiSario and 141-pounder Chayse LaJoie.
Redshirt junior Jaden Abas, who entered the week ranked No. 9 at 149 pounds, finished sixth after having to medically forfeit two matches.
Up next, Stanford welcomes Rutgers to The Farm for its home opener on Saturday, Nov. 19. The Cardinal and Scarlet Knights will wrestle outdoors at Taube Tennis Stadium at 2 p.m.
