Cougars Come to Town for Senior Day

Stanford closes out its season on Saturday night with an 8 p.m. PT matchup with BYU. The Cardinal is 3-8 and the Cougars are 6-5. FS1 will televise the game.

Saturday will serve as Stanford’s Senior Day. The Cardinal will honor all fourth-, fifth- and sixth-year seniors on Senior Day and will recognize 28 student-athletes prior to Saturday night’s game.

Kicker Joshua Karty has been named Pac-12 Special Teams Player of the Week four times this season. He is the first Stanford player to win the award three times since it started in 1987, and the fourth Pac-12 player to win the award four times in a season. The last two to do so were Lou Groza Award winners (Utah’s Matt Gay, Arizona State’s Zane Gonzalez).

Stanford and BYU meet for just the third time in program history on Saturday at Stanford Stadium. The two schools previously announced an eight-game series prior to the 2020 season, but that has since been shortened to two games with BYU set to join the Big 12 Conference next season. Stanford is 2-0 all-time against BYU, defeating them in both 2003 and 2004.

Seventeen true freshmen have debuted so far this season, including eight who have already played more than four games.

Thirty-seven different Cardinal have started a game so far this season - 18 on offense and 19 on defense.

Ten Cardinal have made their first career starts so far in 2022: RB Casey Filkins, RG Levi Rogers, RG Drake Metcalf, RT Jack Leyrer, DT Anthony Franklin, EDGE Aeneas DiCosmo, DL Jaxson Moi, RB Caleb Robinson, RB Mitch Leigber and ILB Tristan Sinclair.

On the final play of the game Saturday at Cal, Karty made a 61-yard field goal, setting a new school record. Karty is 16-for-16 on field goal attempts this season. He is one of two kickers nationally without a miss and at least 16 makes. Karty leads the nation with 12 field goals of more than 40 yards. He is a perfect 12-of-12 on those kicks. Karty has 38 touchbacks on 50 kickoffs this year and the Cardinal ranks sixth nationally in kickoff return defense, allowing just 16.1 yards per return.
