STANFORD, Calif. – No. 23 Stanford split a pair of duals on Sunday, falling to No. 10 Virginia Tech (22-12) before dominating Lindenwood (43-6).
Stanford, which is now 1-2 on the season, won four of the 10 bouts against the Hokies (3-1) and nine out of 10 versus the Lions (1-7). Four Cardinal went 2-0 on the afternoon.
Junior 197-pounder Nick Stemmet knocked off No. 19 Andy Smith of Virginia Tech, 11-5, and then posted a 12-5 decision over Lindenwood's Ryan Golnick. Stemmet is now 9-1 overall and 3-0 in duals this season.
Freshman Nico Provo registered his first career dual win with a 3-1 sudden victory over Virginia Tech's Cooper Flynn. The 125-pounder then earned an 18-2 technical fall in 5:06 against Austin Kegley of Lindenwood. Provo improves to 9-2 overall.
No. 2 Shane Griffith needed the second set of tiebreakers to hold off Virginia Tech's Connor Brady, scoring a reversal to win it 4-2. The redshirt senior then tallied a 16-1 technical fall in 5:45 against Lindenwood's Kaden Charboneau. Griffith moves to 10-0 on the season and 69-6 in his career.
Freshman Daniel Cardenas remained undefeated on the year (12-0) by recording an 11-5 decision over Virginia Tech's Clayton Ulrey and receiving a forfeit from Lindenwood.
Jackson DiSario (133), Jason Miranda (141), Jaden Abas (149), Tyler Eischens (174) and Brook Byers (184) all notched wins against Lindenwood. Both Eischens and Byers had pins versus the Lions.
