Year In Review: Men’s Rowing

STANFORD, Calif. – The 2022 Stanford men's rowing team showed great strides throughout the 2022 season, continuing the program's success as one of the top-20 rowing programs in the country.

The Stanford men's rowing team capped off its 2022 season with two top-20 finishes at its national championship event, continuing a 14-year streak of Stanford boats finishing in the top-20 boats at the annual IRA Championships. The Cardinal's 2022 campaign included highlights of an All-Pac-12 team award for senior James Wright and the continuation of a streak dating back to the 1984 season of the Stanford men's team finishing in the top-four of its conference.

All-Americans
James Wright earned All-America recognition from the Intercollegiate Rowing Coaches Association (IRCA), celebrating the successes of his 2022 season on and off the water. Wright garnered first-team honors this year after marking second-team distinction in 2021.

Wright's award was his third of the 2022 season. The senior was named to the All-Pac-12 team after the 2022 Pac-12 Championships and earned IRCA National Scholar-Athlete honors. The Philadelphia, Pa. native was also the Pac-12 Newcomer of the Year in 2019.

Wright rowed in both the five and stroke seats of the Cardinal's varsity eight boat this year. He helped Stanford earn two wins over Oregon State and a victory over Wisconsin at the Pac-12 Invite. Stanford's varsity eight boat earned a bronze-medal finish at the 2022 Pac-12 Championships.

IRA Recap
No. 11 Stanford finished its 2022 season at the IRA Championships, recording the top finish in the varsity eight third-level final and a fifth-place finish in the second varsity eight third-level final.

With Sunday's efforts, the Cardinal finished 13th in the race for the Varsity Challenge Cup (varsity eight) and 17th in the competition for the Kennedy Challenge Cup (second varsity eight).

IRCA Scholar-Athletes
The Intercollegiate Rowing Coaches of America (IRCA) announced 17 Stanford rowers have been named IRCA Scholar-Athletes, excelling both on the water and in the classroom.

In order to qualify for the honor, athletes needed to maintain a 3.5 GPA or higher through the fall semester, be of at least sophomore standing academically, and must have competed in their program's top 3 boats during the current season or raced at the 2022 IRA Championship.
