Two into Scuffle Semis

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - Charlie Darracott and Shane Griffith went 3-0 to advance to the semifinals of the Southern Scuffle, presented by Compound Sportswear, Sunday, at McKenzie Arena.

As a team, Stanford sits in fifth place with 47.0 team points. The Cardinal produced eight quarterfinalists and has 10 wrestlers advancing to day two of the tournament. Joining Darracott and Griffith in the quarterfinals were Nico Provo (125), Daniel Cardenas (157), Hunter Garvin (165), Tyler Eischens (174), Nick Stemmet (197) and Peter Ming (285).

Darracott upset eighth-ranked Kaden Gfeller of Oklahoma State, 3-2 (TB2), in the quarterfinals at 157 pounds. He opened the tournament with a 14-6 major decision against Gardner Webb's Tyler Brignola before posting a 10-6 decision over Isaac Judge of Iowa State. The junior, who improved to 14-3 on the season, will face No. 4 Jared Franek of North Dakota State in the semifinals on Monday.

Griffith, ranked No. 2 nationally and the No. 1 seed at 165 pounds, registered a pair of decisions over Jurius Clark (Hofstra), 7-2, and Chance McLane (Oklahoma State), 7-3, to start the day. The redshirt senior then dominated Iowa State's Grant Stotts, 13-4, in the quarterfinals. Griffith moves to 13-0 on the season and will meet Minnesota's Cael Carlson in the semifinals on Monday.

Ming also knocked off a ranked opponent, advancing to the quarterfinals with an 8-5 decision over No. 20 Jaron Smith of Maryland. The junior is 7-5 on the season.

Cardenas is now 14-1 on the season after suffering his first collegiate loss in the quarterfinals, 8-5, versus No. 13 Jarrett Jacques of Missouri. His 14-0 record was the best start to a Cardinal career since Griffith won 34 in a row from 2019-21.

The No. 1 seed at 149 pounds, Jaden Abas was upset in the opening round by Virginia's Michael Gioffre, 3-1, in sudden victory. Abas, who is ranked No. 16 nationally, bounced back with an 18-3 (4:38) technical fall over Chattanooga's Matthew Williams and a 20-6 major decision over Duke's Patrick Rowland. He also received a medical forfeit from Drew Roberts of Minnesota.

True freshman Jack Darrah was 3-1 at 184 pounds on Sunday with his lone loss coming to No. 14 Travis Wittlake of Oklahoma State. Jackson DiSario (133) and Luciano Arroyo (141) each went 2-2 for the Cardinal, while true freshman Brook Byers (184) also picked up a win in Chattanooga.
