Cardinal Drops Pac-12 Opener

STANFORD, Calif. – No. 23 Stanford fell to No. 12 Arizona State, 25-14, in its first Pac-12 dual of the season, Sunday, at Burnham Pavilion.

Stanford (3-4, 0-1 Pac-12) won four of the 10 bouts against the Sun Devils (3-4, 1-1 Pac-12), including major decisions at 184 and 197 pounds.

Arizona State jumped out to a 16-0 lead in the dual, notching wins in the first four bouts, and never trailed.

Junior Charlie Darracott got the Cardinal on the board with a 6-4 decision over Max Wilner at 157 pounds. Down 4-2 midway through the second period, Darracott scored an escape and then registered a takedown with six seconds remaining in the period. Wilner went down to start the third and Darracott rode him out to tack on the riding time point. He is now 17-7 on the season and 2-2 in duals.

No. 4 Shane Griffith got back in the win column on Sunday, posting a 4-2 decision over Tony Negron at 165 pounds. Despite giving up a first-period takedown, the redshirt senior scored a takedown with less than 10 seconds to go in the second period that proved to be the difference in the match. Griffith improves to 17-1 overall and 5-1 in duals this season.

True freshman Brook Byers came out with an offensive mindset, scoring a pair of takedowns in the first period en route to a 16-8 major decision over Josh Nummer at 184 pounds. For the match, he tallied five takedowns, four near fall points, an escape and added the riding time point to secure the bonus-point victory. He is now 10-6 on the season and 2-3 in duals.

Junior Nick Stemmet capped off the scoring for the cardinal with a convincing 12-2 major decision over Jonathon Fagen at 197 pounds. Ranked 25th nationally, Stemmet led 6-1 after one. He earned a reversal with 1:20 left in the second and rode out Fagen. In the third, Fagen gave up a point for stalling and Stemmet scored his third takedown of the match, racking up more riding time in the process. He moves to 16-4 overall and 6-1 in duals this season.

Stanford hits the road next week, traveling to Little Rock for a Pac-12 dual on Saturday, Jan. 28 at Noon PT.
