Finished The Job

BERKELEY, Calif. - No. 1 Stanford used a strong finishing kick to hold off No. 4 California 9-6 on Sunday morning to remain unbeaten in three matches at the Cal Cup.

Tied 6-6 with under one minute remaining in the third period, the Cardinal (3-0) scored the game's final three goals while holding the Golden Bears (4-1) scoreless over the final eight minutes.

Aria Fischer scored a game-high four goals while firing off nine shots. Fischer concluded tournament play with 14 goals and 22 shots over three contests.

Sophie Wallace added two goals, including the go-ahead score to make it 7-6 with 40 seconds remaining in the third quarter.

Ryann Neushul converted a pair of penalty shots while dishing out two assists for the Cardinal, which held a 31-30 shot advantage.

Stanford's defense dominated the final quarter, highlighted by Maya Avital's 13 saves.

The Cardinal makes its Avery Aquatic Center debut next weekend, hosting the Stanford Invitational from Feb. 4-5, which features a field of Arizona State, California, Michigan and San Jose State.
