Two-Time Champ

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - Shane Griffith became the second two-time Southern Scuffle champion in school history, Monday, capturing the 165-pound title for the Cardinal.

As a team, Stanford finished fourth - tying for its second-best finish at the tournament. The Cardinal registered 105.5 team points - the most in school history. Stanford had nine top-8 placers in 2023.

Griffith, who is ranked No. 2 nationally, has opened his redshirt senior campaign with 15 consecutive wins. He advanced to the Scuffle finals with a 4-1 decision over Minnesota's Cael Carlson. There, he held off No. 12 Michael Caliendo III (North Dakota State), 3-2, to register his second ranked win of the season.

Redshirt junior Jaden Abas, who dropped his first match of the tournament, bounced back to place third at 149 pounds with a 7-1 record. The San Diego native turned in a gritty 3-2 decision over No. 18 Ethen Miller of Maryland in the third-place bout. Abas is now 15-3 on the season.

Also finishing third for the Cardinal were true freshmen Nico Provo and Daniel Cardenas. At 125 pounds, Provo won four consecutive matches on Monday, including a 10-3 decision over No. 16 Stevo Poulin of Northern Colorado and a 9-3 redemption win over No. 12 Trevor Mastrogiovanni of Oklahoma State.

Cardenas also reeled off four straight wins on Monday, including a 5-3 decision over teammate Charlie Darracott, who reached the semifinals on Sunday, and a 4-2 decision over No. 8 Kaden Gfeller of Oklahoma State. The win over Gfeller, who was previously a two-time Southern Scuffle champion, was the first top-10 victory of Cardenas' career. The Arvada, Colorado, native is now 18-1 overall.

Darracott, who defeated Gfeller in the quarterfinals on Sunday, finished fifth overall at 157 pounds. He fell to the eventual champion, No. 4 Jared Franek (NDSU), 3-2 in the semifinals and received a medical forfeit from No. 13 Jarrett Jacques of Missouri in the fifth-place bout. The junior is now 15-5 on the year.

Hunter Garvin (165), Tyler Eischens (174) and Nick Stemmet (197) all secured seventh-place finishes, while Peter Ming (285) took eighth.

Stanford returns to The Farm on Jan. 12 to host California Baptist and North Dakota State in Burnham Pavilion.
