Spring Season Tees Off

  • No. 1 Stanford women's golf begins its spring slate on Sunday at the Therese Hession Regional Challenge. The loaded, 16-team event will be played at Palos Verdes Golf Club, which will be played on the 6,017-yard, par 71 layout.
  • In addition to the No. 1 Cardinal, the field will feature No. 5 Oregon, No. 6 San Jose State, No. 8 Texas, No. 13 Arizona, No. 15 USC, No. 18 SMU, No. 22 Kentucky, No. 25 Florida, No. 26 Baylor, No. 35 Ohio State, No. 37 Pepperdine, as well as Georgetown, Illinois and Washington.
  • The 54-hole event begins on Super Bowl Sunday with 18 holes. The teams will play 18 holes on Monday and Tuesday, as well.
  • Stanford won all four events during the fall, with Rose Zhang earning individual medalist honors three times. The Cardinal won the Carmel Cup, Stephens Cup, Stanford Intercollegiate and Pac-12 Preview during the fall.
  • The Cardinal's lineup will feature Rose Zhang, Megha Ganne, Sadie Englemann, Kelly Xu and Angelina Ye.
  • The tournament derives its name, Regional Challenge, because each year the top-rated teams from across the country are invited and the event includes a regional competition, in which three schools–one school each from the East, Central, and West–are teamed and the lowest scoring three teams receive an automatic invitation to the subsequent year’s tournament.
  • The Ohio State University has been the Host School for this event since its inception and Coach Therese Hession has been the Tournament Director. In January 2022, Therese decided to retire after nearly 30 years as head coach and Director of Golf at The Ohio State University. To honor Therese for her many accomplishments and her tremendous contributions to women’s collegiate golf, our sponsor, the Northrop Grumman Corporation, has renamed the tournament, The Therese Hession Regional Challenge presented by Northrop Grumman.
  • This year, Stanford is joined in the west region by Oregon, San Jose State, Pepperdine and Washington. The central region features Arizona, SMU, Texas, UCLA and USC. The east region consists of Baylor Florida, Georgetown, Illinois and Kentucky.
