STANFORD, Calif. - No. 14 Stanford scored 11 goals on No. 13 Virginia, but was unable to take down the Cavaliers in its season-opening match on Friday night, falling 14-11. Stanford starts the season at 0-1 while Virginia moves to 1-0.
The Cardinal came out of the gates firing, scoring the first three goals coming from three different players. Jay Browne, Annabel Frist, and Katy Gilbert each notched their first strikes of the season in the first period as Stanford jumped to a 3-0 lead.
Frist led all Stanford scorers on the night with three goals while also chipping in four draw controls. Gilbert and Sarah Jaques each fired in two goals for the second-most on the evening for the Cardinal.
Stanford's defense held the Cavaliers at bay for much of the game, including a 6-4 advantage after the first half. Kara Rahaim had an impressive season debut, facing 36 shots and making 14 saves on the day.
The reigning Pac-12 Goalkeeper of the Year recorded a save percentage of .500 while making twice as many saves as her counterpart for Virginia.
Virginia regained its footing in the match through the third quarter, taking a 9-8 lead into the final period. Despite pulling back within one goal with 5:35 left in the game thanks to a goal from Ailish Kelly that was assisted by Ashley Humphrey, the Cardinal were unable to complete the comeback.
Humphrey joined Frist in the lead for total points for Stanford as the NCAA record-holder tallied three points from one goal and two assists. Freshman Rylee Bouvier also recorded her first goal in her first game on The Farm.
Stanford returns to action for the first Pac-12 game of the season, taking on California in Cagan Stadium on Wednesday, February 15 at 6 p.m.
