Another Great Day in Georgia

ATHENS, Ga. -- No. 19 Stanford put together a pair of wins over Charlotte and No. 13 Georgia on day two of the Red & Black Showcase on Saturday.

Against the 49ers, senior Alana Vawter (3-1) got the win out of the bullpen for Stanford (6-2). The right-hander went five shutout innings, giving up two hits, no walks and striking out eight in the 5-4 win.

NiJaree Canady (4-0) went the distance for Stanford (7-2) when facing the Bulldogs, giving up three hits, walking one and striking out nine in a 3-0 shutout win. The shutout was the fourth of the season for the Cardinal and second solo-shutout for Canady.

At the plate against Charlotte, the Cardinal was led by Sydney Steele, who went 2-for-3 on the day with a triple and two RBI. Freshman River Mahler put together a noteworthy performance as well, going 4-for-4 with a double. Junior Caelan Koch also chipped in for Stanford, putting together one hit in two trips to the plate while adding a double, two walks and an RBI.

Junior Aly Kaneshiro led the way offensively for the Cardinal against Georgia, going 1-for-3 in the ballgame with a double and an RBI. Emily Schultz put together a standout performance as well, going 1-for-3 with a double and an RBI. Taylor Gindlesperger also helped out, going 2-for-4 for Stanford.

GAME 1: STAN 5, CLT 4
HOW IT HAPPENED
Charlotte put together four runs in the first and second inning to take a 4-0 lead. In the bottom of the second Stanford got an RBI single from Steele, scoring senior Emily Schultz from second base to put the Cardinal on the board.
The Cardinal held the off the 49ers for the rest of the game and closed the gap further in the third. Stanford scored a run when senior Emily Young drew a walk that scored junior Aly Kaneshiro. The catcher followed up with an RBI single to drive in Mahler.
Stanford drove home a run on an RBI triple off the bat of Steele, scoring Schultz, evening the score at 4-4 in the fifth. That 4-4 tie turned into a 5-4 Cardinal lead in the sixth. Stanford pushed across a run on Koch's one-out RBI double.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Cardinal took the lead for good in the first, scoring for the first time in the inning. Stanford got on the board thanks to Kaneshiro's RBI double with one out.
The Cardinal then tacked on runs in the fifth inning when it scored two times. A run-scoring double off the bat of Schultz was the highlight of the inning.
