Another Record for Onwuzurike

Bruce Lehane Scarlet & White Results Opens in a new window Crimson Elite Results Opens in a new window

BOSTON – In his first collegiate indoor 200-meter race, sophomore Udodi Onwuzurike shattered a Stanford record Saturday that stood for 26 years.

Onwuzurike ran 20.61 to win the Bruce Lehane Scarlet and White Invitational on the 200-meter banked track at the Boston University Track and Tennis Center by 0.42 seconds. The school indoor record of 21.17, set by Jimmie Johnson in 1997, didn't have a chance.

Onwuzurike, a Nigerian international competitor, has tied or broken school records nine times. He now holds school records in four events – the indoor 60 and 200, and outdoor 100 and 200.
Through Friday, five NCAA Division I runners had faster times this indoor season. Onwuzurike is seeking his first NCAA Indoor Championships appearance.

In the women's 200, Stanford freshman Alyssa Jones won in 23.69, also by a substantial margin. Jones was not placed in what was expected to be the fastest section. Instead, she won the second-fastest section by 0.52 seconds and was the fastest overall by 0.44.

In the men's pole vault, Garrett Brown was second in 16-7 ½ (5.07m) and Max Manson third (15-7 ¾, 4.77m). They also competed on Friday at the Crimson Elite and Multi at Harvard, with Manson third at 16-11 ½ (5.17m) and Brown eighth (15-9 ¾, 4.82m).
