Cardenas, Griffith Advance to Quarters

TULSA, Okla. - Daniel Cardenas and Shane Griffith have advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Championships, Thursday, at the BOK Center. 

As a team, Stanford is tied for 17th with 10.0 points. Five Cardinal remain alive in the tournament. 

In his NCAA Championships debut, Cardenas earned a 12-0 major decision over Columbia's Cesar Alvan in the opening round. The No. 6 seed at 157 pounds, Cardenas reached the quarterfinals with a 6-1 decision over Northern Iowa's Derek Holschlag. The true freshman improved to 24-1 in his rookie campaign and will face No. 3 seed Peyton Robb of Nebraska on Friday morning.

Griffith, who has yet to give up a point, returns to the quarterfinals for the third straight season. The redshirt senior opened the tournament with a 1-0 decision over Gardner-Webb's Rodrick Mosley and then dominated Nebraska's Bubba Wilson, 10-0, in the second round. The No. 9 seed at 165 pounds, Griffith will face top-seeded David Carr of Iowa State in the next round. 

Jaden Abas, the No. 9 seed at 149 pounds, turned in a first-period fall in his opening match against Edinboro's Ryan Burgos. The redshirt junior then fell 3-1 to No. 8 seed Max Murin of Iowa. Abas will face No. 23 seed Victor Voinovich of Oklahoma State in the consolation bracket on Friday morning. 

No. 27 seeds Tyler Eischens (174) and Nick Stemmet (197) both dropped their opening-round matches, but won in the evening session to remain alive in the tournament. A redshirt senior, Eischens will meet No. 12 seed Aaron Olmos of Oregon State in his next match, while Stemmet will face No. 5 seed Michael Beard of Lehigh.

Wrestling resumes on Friday at 9 a.m. PT with the quarterfinals on ESPNU.
