Card Falls to Seawolves

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Stanford started hot, scoring the first six goals of the game against No. 6 Stony Brook, but ultimately fell to the Seawolves, 14-11. The Cardinal moves to 2-3 on the season while Stony Brook improves to 4-0 on the year.

The Cardinal came out firing, netting a perfect 4-0 first quarter, shutting out the Seawolves while jumping out to a commanding lead. Ashley Humphrey, Sarah Jaques, Annabel Frist, and Ailish Kelly each tallied a goal in the first period.

Stanford added two more goals in the second quarter before Stony Brook got on the board. The Cardinal held a 7-4 advantage heading into halftime.

Humphrey led all Cardinal players with five points, coming from two goals and three assists. Annabel Frist also tallied four goals to lead all Stanford scorers.

The second half fell in favor of Stony Brook, as the Seawolves added six goals in the third period to Stanford's two. Stony Brook claimed its first lead of the day during the final seconds of the third quarter.

Kara Rahaim was a force on defense again, making 15 saves while facing 35 shots. The goalkeeper also snagged six ground balls to lead all players in the game.

The Cardinal recorded 16 draw controls on the day, four more than Stony Brook. Frist had eight of Stanford's controls, while Katy Gilbert had the next highest total on the team with three.

Caroline Mondiello and Ailish Kelly were strong defensively, forcing two caused turnovers each.

Stanford returns home for the next game, facing Albany on Sunday, March 12 at 1 p.m.
